Hey everyone..
I have been thinking of maybe wish for a playstation 2 (the new silver edition).. I have a gamecube (or it's my brothers) atm, but I thought it would be nice with a new gameconsole, especially one you can download games to.
So, what do I need for that? A dvd-burner. Does anyone have any recommendations? Not to expensive please, but not bad either.
Could someone tell me (or post a nice page) that describes the procedure with downloading and burning ps2 games.

Get an xbox
Then you can watch divx etc too
But if you must get a PS2:-
Chip it, download games (using links from Sharereactor), burn bin and cue with whatever you want to, put the copy in the PS2, play game (it's that easy)

If you prefer PS2 games then do what PC_Arcade does above.
But I would reccomend looking into the XBOX and it's modification!
Ity far outweighs the PS2, but the Playstation does have superior games
But a chipped xbox is a veritable treat

And you can soft-mod an xbox and keep your guarantee intact
And as Paul rightly points out a modded xbox is a real treat .
A modded Ps2 is a PS2 that can play copied PS2 games
I'd dispute the claim Paul makes that the PS2 games are superior (they were, but not anymore).

Hmm.. Now you made me uncertain... hehe
Let's list up some advantages:
PS2:
Many nice games
Nice appearance
More comfertable controls
XBOX:
watch divx (STRONG ONE!)
Harddrive (or am I wrong?)
Better tech specs.
So you can watch burned divx movies with it? Or what?
And what do you mean with "xbox is a real treat"

Some of them darn arsholes release games in .GI format however. those are a little more work... I spent like 4 hours figuring out how to do it.

.gi is recordnowmax format it's easy enough to deal with (once you find a copy of recordnowmax!)
You are right, the xbox has a harddrive and can play burned divx movies (you can upgrade the HD in the xbox fairly easily too, I've got a 40Gb in mine)
You can use the xbox to :-
Play emulators (Mame, Kawaks, Playstation, n64, snes, nes, c64, amiga emulators are all available)
Play xbox games (obviously)
Play Divx, xvid, mpg, vcd, svcd, mvcd, kvcd, rm, wmv etc
Put games on the harddrive (no need to find the disk)
Use as a Linux box (with NO extra hardware)
I'm sure there's more but that'll do ya
With the PS2 you can :-
Play ps2 games (obviously)
Play Playstation games
Play Mame (I think)
Use as a linux box (if you buy the PS2 linux kit for ANOTHER $200!)

finding a working copy of recordnowmax proved to be quite hard however. Extra amuzing was it then that when we finally found it, it did not support the dvd burner. Then we had to find some update utility, which was stupidly difficult, since there were so many different versions and the official one was not the newest. After that it still did not work, so I did some forum searching and found tons of people with the same problem.
I tried extracting the files from the .gi file with WinIso and burn it manually, but that did not work in the xbox.
Then I thouht it might be possible to convert it to another format. Neither Winiso or Isobuster could do this offcource, so I had to get another 'Iso' program (don't remember which) that could do this. When I finally found one, there was only the little problem of the .gi format being 3 files, me needing it to be one single file. I did more forum searching and found the only way to do this was with dos-command copy (which is quite slow). Finally set together as one file I could convert, which also took quite a while since it was oh well 4 gb, and then I could finally burn it.
Spent somewhere between 4 & 5 hours doing all this shit. All because some doob can't stick to more standard format like .bin or .iso or .nrg or whatever. =(

I think early on in the xbox's life, the xiso format hadn't been figured out properly and therefore recordnowmax was the only program that could create xbox compatible images from plain old directories (still is AFAIK). Therefore early xbox releases were in that format.
I had simillar problems, the difference bein that my CD writer was supported (thank god!)

wats happening with the PSX? Is it a ps2 with a hard drive and dvd-r burner or is it a limited edition thing?
I've read about it and it sounded neat, but haven't heard squat since
note: psx is not referring to playstation1, but rather the PSX device

I have read some about xbox now, and all of it's possibilties. Sounds cool.
Think I will get one for christmas. Also a chipp too of course.
Watched some games that are avaible for downloading.. Most of them are using NTSC.. (an american/jap tv-system as I know).. I think that the xbox i will buy are using PAL.. Is it possible to play these games anyway? With or without a mod chipp?

The PSX is being launched on the 13th December according to Forbes, but if these prices are correct tyen I really can't see them selling many:
Quote: | A PSX with a 160-gigabyte HDD will sell for 79,800 yen ($731) and be able to record up to 204 hours of television, the company said. It will also sell a 250-gigabyte version for 99,800 yen($914).
|
!!
As for the xbox, NTSC games will play in PAL format and PAL in NTSC, with a mod-chip / soft-mod, there are a couple of exceptions, but in the main it's correct (i've come across 2 titles that don't work properly and a few more with minor skipping unless the TV system is changed - which is easily done)

I've got a matrix in mine, although If I were buying today I'd probably buy an xbit or a chameleon, or use a soft-mod (cos I'm cheap )

Ok..
Xbit sounds pretty good, but it's pretty expensive.. Costs around 90? (+ install 50?)
Soft-mod, what's that?

Soft mods are a way of "chipping" your xbox without opening it up and putting a chip inside (in this case it works by modifying the original Microsoft Dashboard) - there are risks in doing it (you can screw your xbox up, if you do it wrong, although you can usually recover from it), but the advantage is it's cheap (It cost me ?12.99 for a second hand copy of MA and ?9.99 for a secondhand M$ memory card)
There's a guide here. It's not as complicated as it looks
You can do everything on the cheap with an xbox :
Want an action Replay (?40)? make your own for next to nothing
Want to use the Xbox pad on the PC? easy make your own lead
want to use your usb mouse / keyboard on the xbox? make your own lead
Want to rent a game and copy it to your harddrive to keep it? easy
It's a great console (when modded) and is THE best media player I've ever come across (and that includes the PC)
