lol, you can play pirate games on an unmoded box using this method:
http://www.maxconsole.com/?mode=comments&newsid=1090

Not tried it but all the isos on suprnova indicates it works. I'd assume you load linux using the same method.

edit: yes you do.

hehe, i find it amusing that people port linux to even the bizzariest of platforms. I mean, cool, well done... but why? :o

i just read about the gc loader u need a pc for that, that sucks!... why not make a chip or something and we also need a hd... then we are talking here. the why it is now it is totally unintressting. but i hope they come up with some smart solution in the future... i want a gc but not if u cant play backup games and not connect a hd to it.

Yes, it is, my PS2 is "softmodded" (kinda) if by softmodded you mean "I can play copies without buying a chip".

It's easy enough, it's like a variation on the old playstation swap trick.

There are limitations though, a CD game HAS to be below the size of the TOC of the boot disk you use ~632 Mb (although AFAIK there is no limit for DVD backups I rarely use my PS2 and since getting a DVD burner haven't tried a backup on it)

There's a useful resource site here. Although you need to pay to download the no mod patches , It's still a useful site and explains how it works.

i wouldn't bother with that, just get a chip. I did when I had a ps2. Disc-swapping the most tedious thing ever :o

I can't be arsed reading through that link, but i'm assuming this is the knife swap trick?

Yeah, knife swap.

I agree that disk swapping is tedious, but for the amount my PS2 gets used it's not worth me getting a chip.

 That's ok! When they release the Linux build, I'll give that a go and report back here and tell you all if it's any good or not.

I'm still using the method - it's been improved a little bit since I started (more GUIs, faster loading of the game loader onto the gamecube, and shitloads more ROMs) but they still need to sort out the streaming speed from PC to GC. Rumours are circulating that the author of the code that streams the games to GC has packed it all in, but we will wait and see.

Check out what my girlfriend pre-ordered for me the other day though! A beautiful gameboy with old school Famicom stylings from Japan! Happy Valentine's Day to me!
