I've got this external HDD on which I have half my collection stored. I used to backup all my docs on it too, but since it became full, I moved my backup to a different external HDD. I could not delete the old backup folder however (it was some 150 GB big), I could only get rid of it with help of Unlocker. I also can't seem to copy over two Excel files in which I keep administration of my collection to this external HDD.

Does this mean this external HDD is at the end of it's lifetime? I have only had it for a few years, but I used to fire it up at least once a week, to back up some films.

I have switched OS in the meantime, but my other HDD's don't seem to care about that. This one does: it wants me to do everything in Admin mode and even then it refuses to complete certain tasks (like deleting files). Most trouble is with files which were on the HDD before the switch to Win8.

Any ideas?

Specs:

LaCie External HDD, 1000 GB
Windows 8

Mmm, then I need a new HDD too, as I don't have space elsewhere to store the files temporarily.

take ownership of the drive:

Open a CMD prompt in admin mode and type this
Code:
takeown /F "full path of folder or drive" /R /D Y

That way it should stop pestering you

What file system are you using? NTFS?

@ PCA: OK, I'll try that. I only use it as backup, and all my new backup files go on a different HDD, so I'll only need it if I want to see a file which is on this one.
@ chup: yes, NTFS.

LaCie are bad from what i've read, and NTFS isn't a great format and gets its knickers in a twist a lot. You should look at storing with some redundency, ie. a nas. For archival, unraid is better than raid i find. Will cost a bit to build it out but I'm onto NAS storage now.
