I have been looking to rip some VHS that I have for a long time. The only thing is, I cannot decide what is best to do the job. The range of convertors is quite confusing.

I would prefer an external unit to an internal.

I would quite like to get a TiVo PVR, but does anyone know if video can be captured onto that then exported to PC? In fact can regular TiVo recordings be exported too?

Any advice much appreciated

I like the idea of tivo, but tivo went bust in the uk :( BskyB has all but abliterated them (despite the fact tivo was a better system)

Ok, I'll probably start saving up for a Dazzle then. Unless anyone can tell me that you can capture your vids and export em on a TiVo.

I'd get a Sky+ but you can't export from it and I don't have a Sky subscription.

If you don't want to subscribe to Sky, get a Pace Twin PVR. It's a freeview receiver with a built in HD.

Apart from being a bit buggy at times, and the fact that we are still waiting for a 7 day EPG, it's one of the best things I ever bought. :)

Don't think so, but I would put out a general warning against pace. Make sure you have a warranty, they break down all the f*cking time. My brother has sky+ (pace) and its been replaced 4 times in under 2 years.

They are buggy as hell.

Supposed to be a good card (not seen it or anything to heard). Has a 10bit decoder which is what you want. Gives significantly better quality.

is good too :)

Both are internal cards, but I hear are the kind of stuff you should be looking for.

I found the asus card here:
http://www.armadacomputers.co.uk/show.p ... 75&cat=158

Do you think the price is right though? Seems cheap to me, I was expecting it to cost like ?70 or something. I'll just get that I think, but do you think it is PAL, it should be, it's a UK site, but if that price is wrong I don't want to email them and bring their attention to it, I'd rather just order. The price could be right though, I don't know. What do you think?

Hmmm, does seem very cheap. I've not seen one up close, its just what I read on a forum about capture devices. You may want to ask them about the quality to expect from the card.

I guess a DV bridge is going to give you best quality, but you are not going to get a good one for less than ?100, hell most are about ?150+.

hmm yeah I just read on afterdawn

...the Next best thing which is quite a Bit down the ladder in Quality would be a TV Tuner Card with a 10Bit Decode chip like a Leadtech Expert or an Asus TV tuner card, You can get one of these for under $75 but the Quality will not be as High and there are a Lot more potential problems Like Sync Problems and dropping Frames and a Hundred other problems that can pop up it makes it worth it to sped twice as Much and get something you can rely on...

So maybe I should wait and save up some cash. Maybe I will just get Formac Studio TVR, you know how I like my Mac after all :P

Well I went and blew my cash all over a Formac TVR, but now my Mac is totally dead so it's gonna be quite some time before I actually get going:(

Hopefully it'll get sorted soon though and I can get ripping 8)
