On this front I've yet to find a 'perfect' program, or even a clear best. A long time ago I used to use PCcillin which imo is still a decent choice, but unfortunately over the years its got bloated with lots of useless features which eventually made me switch.

I went through various software trying to find the perfect one, but never managed to find anything. For a long time I was using AVG, but was concerned that it didn't seem to be finding many viruses like it should have been. So I decided to try out the much toated Kaspersky... supposed Supreme Overlord. To be honest, its very crappy. It maybe good I don't know as the program hideously eats through resources and quickly becomes totally unnusable.

Recently I've settled on "BitDefender Professional Edition". Although it has a firewall built in that I rather it didn't, I've disabled that and it seems to be a bit more active than previous scanners and very intrusive.

Any tips on AV software people are using?

I use <a href="http://www.sophos.com/" target=blank>Sophos</a>
What we have installed accross the board at work so what I'm used to and like.
Again it's all a matter of taste and what you want.

Sophos does the job as far as I can see.

But I've currently been trying "other" brands to see what they're like!

one thing about AV soft recently is that they all seem to be bloating out with unnecessary features (the trend seems to have some crappy firewall built in nowadays at least) and no one package seems to be able to catch everything, most i have had experience with thru work over the last few years..

at the moment the best form of virus protection is to stop using IE and Outlook.

Damn, I got infected with a stupid worm that did a few stupid things and couldn't get rid of it at all. Tried bitdefender and sofos and avg to no avail. finally I "gave up" and installed norton which found and removed it immediatly! Really slows donw the machine though. maybe I'll uninstall 2004 and go back to 2002? That used to be rather good.

You sure you can do so, JD?

When I got my computer for long time ago it had Windows ME as OS, and norton antivirus for Windows ME. Then I installed Windows 2000, and Norton Antivirus wont run. :?

hehe, I've done that to some extent as well, but it doesn't help much when my memory is shot to hell after years of hard partying. I was never a very orderly person from the get go, but I actually once even forgot to breathe and nearly fainted....
