Vista firewall and router. Router does most of the good shit, Vista fw is only on because I am too lazy to switch it off.

Using Comodo for quite some time now. No problems here.

Bit Defender works fairly well....However i did splash out and bought a Nokia firewall for my home network.

I do concur that sygate is the nuts.

Is a software firewall necessary if you have a router? I've not run one for a while cos I got fed up with the nag screen on Sygate telling me to update.

hardware is better for blocking inbound and closing port, what it can't do is prompt you when an application is trying to connect. So its better than software on that front, but you don't know what exactly on your network is trying to connect out of nearly all home router/hardware firewall solutions.

So the software firewall is necessary if you want to stop programs connecting out with a gui.

I don't run one myself (software)
