Nightmare Sisters - nice and sensual (or horny, whichever you prefer) movie about geeks and dorks coming together and doing a seance. All of a sudden, the geek girls are turned into very hot girls, but actually they are succubuses, or is it succubi? Then the dorks have to find a solution for this problem, while they have to escape the senior frat brothers as well. Nice and cheesy, recommended, especially if you're into Quigley or if you're a bad movie fan (or both, which is very probable in this case).

Wham! Bam! Thank You Spaceman! - someone wrote on imdb that this was even sillier than Flesh Gordon. While I enjoyed Flesh Gordon thoroughly (I think it is one of the funniest bad movies I have ever seen), this one was very repetitive and a little annoying. While at first it's kinda funny to see the weirdly dressed up aliens putting their tonguelike penis into earth women to (of course!) save their race, when they have done it 10+ times and that's what the movie is all about, then it gets annoying. Oh, I almost forgot: there's also some stock footage from porn movies spliced in. Only watch when very, VERY "far away".

Homecoming - more a thriller, so I moved it to the Non-horror section. The story itself is not so interesting, but it gets played out nicely and it has a certain tension to it. Not much, but enough to make the film enjoyable. Mischa Barton plays an ex-girlfriend from the former star of the football team of a small town. This former star returns to say goodbye to football officially and brings his new girlfriend, played by Jessica Stroup. This makes ex-gf mad, so she starts acting weird. I'm a fan of Stroup, she plays tough girls, or girls who are having a tough time, in a way I really appreciate. In this film she is great once more. Recommended, but don't expect any gore or something. After all, it's more of a thriller.

Drag me to Hell - pants. I was expecting this to be good and was really looking forward to it. Very disappointed.

Didn't you find anything good about it? Or was it the expectations thing that killed it for you?

Yesterday I went to the cinema to see:

La Siciliana Ribelle - nice biopic of a Sicilian girl who refuses to keep the omerta, and she tells the police everything which has been going on with the mafia in her village over the past 6, 7 years. The mafiosi are being caught, but the stress and the pressure on the girl become too much. I thought it was nicely made, this film, it was very dramatic at times, but also pretty realistic. It showed the double consciousness of people living with the mafia very well. What struck me is that in the end of the movie you see some real life footage from Rita, the girl, and she looks a lot prettier than the actress who portrays her in the film. Kind of the other way around. If you are into mafia films, or if you want something different, try to watch this. I say try, as I can imagine it isn't shown in every theatre.

I deleted this piece of junk after the scene with the dead gypsy woman. When I want to see horror even horror comedy I want to see blood and something supernatural. So far: Check. But when I want to see something really disgusting, which I never do, I'd download some japanese vomit or worm eating junk flick. If this is the new Raimi quality I change to Boll movies.

Withnail and I - British comedy, but it didn't get to me. I didn't understand the jokes, or there weren't any, I'm not sure. There were only a few funny moments, but for a film with a runtime of 100 minutes, it was too little. Sometimes I had a hard time understanding what people were saying in this movie, so maybe it would have been better with subs.

Octopus II - cliche story of a monster threatening a large celebration with thousands of visitors, this time 4th of July in NY. All cliches are there: the policeman who fucked up and now isn't believed by anyone when he tells them about the octopus, the policmena who is going to be transferred to a deskjob in a week and then gets killed, the mayor who is more concerned with PR than with the monster stories of the policeman, the bus full of children who need to be rescued in the nick of time and of course the second appearance of the monster when it had already been blown up before. So, if you want a brainless cliche movie, watch this one. Otherwise, go look for something else.

Just watched 'Tormented'. Did actually sit through it. So it is not that bad. But it is not worth keeping. Horror? Perhaps. But whether or not the bullied teenager was dead or not makes absolutely no difference. Cheap hack'n'slash movie and very slow paced.

What did you think about Tales from the Dark Side? I have it on DVD, but not seen it yet.

Yesterday I saw

Hell House The Book Of Samiel - unoriginal storyline about demons making their way to our world thorugh a house as a portal. They need 3 sacrifices in order to enter our world. What follows is a myriad of cliches, not so good acting (but have een - much - worse), some sfx of which about 50% is OK and the rest is laughable and the stupidest dialogue in movies this year. Let me give an example. Imagine, you are in a haunted house but you don't believe it i haunted, or you don't want to believe it. But, just now, your girlfriend got possessed by a demon and she was talking in a strange voice. Then your friend (a male, just to clarify) also starts to talk in a weird voice, grabs a knife and tries to kill your girlfriend. You stop him, just in time. Both wake up and your girlfriend begs you to leave the house. Question: what do you reply? In this movie the charcater replies: "No! No way!" and that, my dear friends is so very illogical, that it doesn't even make sense in a low budget horror movie. And I think it says all about this flick. If you want a laugh, watch it. Otherwise go look for something else.

Star Trek 2009 - fantastic, loved it as much as I disliked Drag me to Hell. 9/10
Ice Age 3 - Good animation, very funny in parts. 8/10
Monsters vs Aliens - OK, but something lacking that I can't put my finger on. 6/10
Fargo. Got to see this at last. When good, very good. When bad it's dull and a bit odd - Yar. 7/10

Rise Of The Gargoyles - I was pleasantly surprised about this one. I was expecting a cheesefest, but instead I got a quite enjoyable creature feature with a tip of demonics thrown in. The gargoyles are cgi, but it is done in a way more directors should try: no monsters in broad daylight keep my eyes from being hurt. Thanks, director. The setting of the story is Paris and I tried to figure out whether it was really Paris where they filmed. It isn't, I think, but they did their best to conceal it and they succeed: I never saw an obvious sign of it not being in France. I think the main character was a bit too much of a jock, but all in all this movie deserves a recommendation. Not because it is gonna be the best movie of 2009, but because it is really enjoyable.

Microwave Massacre - going in for a real bad movie, I got some stupid effects, a storyline which was a bit dragging and a main part actor who spoke like he was rehearsing in the mirror. There were indeed some nice boobs in this, but they should have had a real role, instead of just being the wallpaper for the opening credits. It was kind of OK, for a bad movie. I laughed harder at some other turds.

Giallo - I don't really like the giallo genre, but I really like Argento, so I gave it a try. The verdict is easy: there's much more giallo than Argento in it for me and thus I didn't like it. The first half was so boring I used ffwd several times and in the latter half there are some uninteresting things too. The ending is very weird, are we to believe it is a good ending after all or are we to believe the policeman was totally wrong? Adrian Brody was not doing his best acting work: he was mostly looking painful and not really being his character. The strongpoints of Argentos old movies (atmosphere, music, tension) were totally absent from this one, unfortunately. And like many others, I believe he has lost it.

Staunton Hill - son of George A. Romero, Cameron Romero made this rednecksploitation horror. This is his second movie, or you would have to count Plant Life from 1995 as a movie too, then this one is his third. Heavily leaning on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this story is about a group of teenagers/students who end up at a redneck family's house. Unknown to them is the fact that this family is a group of killers who slaughter anyone who enters their property. This isn't very original, and only the ending could have saved it, but it was too obvious what it was gonna be, around 30 minutes in already. Sad. Skip this and try out his next installment, Sociopath.

Infestation - several people here said this was a good film, and I agree. I was expecting a regular creature feature, but the way the non-creature parts were handled was refreshing: it actually was funny. The monsters were CGI, but I have seen much, much worse. This was quite OK. The alien-thingy (is a person infested or not?) is always interesting and it is done quite well in this movie, not cheesy or cheap or anything. I really liked the half breeds. Recommended!

The Storm - latest Dutch film production about the flooding of the southwest part of the Netherlands in 1953. Well made, not very spectacular and some suspension of disbelief, but the atmosphere is well caught and I think it is rather spot-on when considering historical accuracy. Recommended. Oh, if you didn't understand by now: it's not horor ;)

Chamber of Horrors - classic horror tale about serial killer who escapes death and then takes revenge on everyone who had him convicted. It was quite cute to see the warnings for gruesome scenes and then
Spoiler:
not seeing ANYTHING gruesome, really
Enjoyable, but not really my thing. Some beautiful ladies, though. It lacked a bit of atmosphere, like in the Hammer movies.

Last night the wife and I watched Doghouse, very good. The missus likes Danny Dyer and I like Noel Clarke so all was cool.

The film itself is pretty good, but what it made it better was the fact the missus liked it too, a rare occurence.

Watchmen (2009): A rather long (162 min), but entertaining pop-corn action/sci-fi combo. I liked the alternate past (compared to what actually happened in Vietnam) and the dark atmosphere of it. The ending was OK, although I liked the character of Rorschach. According to IMDb there's also a 215 minute ultimate cut of this - too long. Recommended if you need to see something exciting you at a constant level for over two and a half hours.

Watchmen is cool, although maybe a touch too long indeed.
