SYNOPSIS
Filmed in English, this Italian mystery thriller/melodrama explores the murder of a doctor's wife. The doctor himself (Jean Morel) has long since taken up with a mistress. His wife begged out of engagements as an asthmatic, all the while actually entertaining herself with her part-time job as a stripper. Did the doctor kill her? After all, he took out a large life-insurance policy on his wife. One highlight of this film is the effective use of its San Francisco setting. Another is its gas-chamber sequence, filmed in San Quentin's actual gas chamber.

NOTES
From Lucio Fulci, the infamous director of Zombie and The Beyond, whose controversial career has flayed every envelope of cinematic excess comes Perversion Story. Nothing can prepare you for this stunning thriller.

Jean Sorel (Belle De Jour) stars as an arrogant San Francisco doctor trapped between his sultry mistress (Elsa Martinelli of Blood And Roses) and an amoral stripper (Marisa Mell of Danger: Diabolik) - who happens to bear an uncanny resemblance to his recently deceased (and possibly murdered) wife. What follows has been called Fulci's first true masterpiece, where sexual obsession, cruel deception and depraved murder all come together.

John Ireland and Faith Domergue co-star in this gripping giallo that features eye-popping nudity, provocative locations (including the gas chamber at San Quentin) and a badass jazz score by Riz Ortolani (Mondo Cane, Kill Bill).

This is the French theatrical cut and is missing some of the scenes that are included on the previous VHS rip that was previously released on ed2k. The French cut wasn't created to censor the film, but to simply create a different version for the French audience. Both French and the so-called English VHS version contain scenes that cannot be found on both versions, but the VHS version is 6 minutes longer so it has more footage.

Check out the differences between the versions from this DVD Times article:

ABOUT THE RIP
My rip from the Severin Films DVD. Trailer included. The feature itself has dual audio, but I strongly suggest watching it in its original language: English. The italian audio track was included for those, who think all Italian productions should be seen in Italian no matter in what language they were filmed in.

MeGUI, DVDDecrypter, BeSweetGUI and NanDub used for the ripping and encoding process.

A decent Fulci not a giallo, but it has an interesting sub plot of blackmail and revenge with plenty of nakedness.

I actually think it's a giallo after watching it again a few weeks ago. It has all the necessary elements: (murder-)mystery, Italian director, cinematography, music, the setting, everything is in its place. After all, more than half of the gialli don't feature graphic death scenes and the infamous black-gloved killer. Atleast in my book, the mystery is the key element. It seems that the author of the book Blood & Black Lace agrees as well. Even the latest, and perhaps only English academic giallo study, La Dolce Morte, Vernacular Cinema and the Italian Giallo film by Mikel J. Koven draws the same conclusion. But of course it's in the eye of the beholder like the definition of film noir.
