Quote:
Mavis dreams of owning her own home, and the dream seems finally within reach. But her husband Arthur has dreams of his own. In this off-beat musical - a satire that combines fantasy, social observation and songs - a working class man goes to put a deposit on a new house only to find he prefer spending to saving and is happy to spend his money on a few hours of happiness rather than a lifetime's conventionality.

'The End of Arthur's Marriage' seems an unlikely Ken Loach piece: a satirical musical with moments of fantasy, surrealism and formal experimentation. However, the influences here are quite typical of Loach's early television work: Bertolt Brecht's epic theatre, the French new wave and the non-naturalism of Troy Kennedy Martin, with whom Loach worked on 'Diary of a Young Man' in 1964.

Quote:
Today Ken Loach is an internationally feted filmmaker. But he was also once a prophet in his own country. Working with a generation of radicals, he excelled at what became known as the drama-documentary - a TV genre that was socially engaged, aesthetically experimental and politically influential. It made working class people the subject of public service broadcasting. This essential collection has many of the key works which now deserve the widest rescreening for their enduring relevance and artistic courage. [socialistreview.org.uk]
