The grit is laid on thick in "36" (aka "36 Quai des Orfevres"), a noir-soaked French policier that receives sturdy backup from old pros Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu. This multiple Cesar nominee delivers the grimy goods even as it often feels like an homage to Michael Mann's "Heat."
While the original French title might remind cinephiles of the Henri-Georges Clouzot drama, "Quai des Orfevres," the 1947 film is related to the 2004 import by name only -- the address of what is essentially the Paris version of Scotland Yard.
There, two driven, philosophically opposed undercover cops, Auteuil's Leo Vrinks and Depardieu's Denis Klein are both under consideration to succeed the retiring Robert Mancini (Andre Dussollier) as police commissioner.
Key to that promotion is being the one to collar the elusive perpetrators behind a string of deadly armored car robberies, and Vrinks and Klein draw on very different sets of moral ethics to achieve their goals.
Director Olivier Marchal, a former cop, choreographs this stylized crime thriller with an authoritative panache, though the script, which he co-wrote with Dominique Loiseau, Frank Mancuso and Julien Rappeneau, makes a clunky getaway in the third act at the expense of a precariously drawn-out resolution.
But he gets great, tautly complex performances out of his always reliable leads. Unflatteringly shot in harsh light, Depardieu and Auteuil cast all vanity aside, wearing their characters' tragic flaws like badges of honor on their Botox-free brows. Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter

There's a dvd cover here for anyone who wants.

This French flick was a great surprise. A really powerful 'film noir'.
I thought I'd bring it to HHAH cause I'm sure some of you connoisseurs of the genre would enjoy it very much.
