Plot:
Rape Of The Vampire opens with a shot of four sisters conversing
with a man. The man warns the sisters of three Parisians heading
towards their manor. It is believed that these four sisters are
vampires. The three individuals heading towards the manor do not
believe that the sisters are vampires, and hope to cure them of the
ailments that beset them. The sisters meet up with the visitors and
quickly their lives begin to transform. No longer is their the bond
that once existed. After several tense scenes, the first portion of
the film ends with a sequence by the water, where the sisters
meet their demise. As the second portion begins, we are
introduced to the "Vampire Queen". The story makes a distinct
shift. What happens from here? Can things be restored as they
began? Watch this wonderful film to find out as me telling it would
ruin the pleasure of watching how director Jean Rollin works his
magic.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me get right to it, I think Jean Rollin is a genius. Rape Of The
Vampire is Jean Rollin's first feature-length film. Originally shot as
a thirty minute short, Rape of The Vampire was later expanded
into a feature film. Rape Of The Vampire plays like a two-part film
and in fact, is just that. After the first thirty minutes are over, we
see credits introducing the second part of the film. I think it is
interesting to point out the vast differences between the two
parts. The first part moves quickly, focusing more on action and
less story. The second part is more atmospheric, mixing great
visuals with implied eroticism. Rollin has the fantastic ability to dive
deep into the viewers emotions, creating a real sense of being
within the film. Rape Of The Vampire marks the start of an amazing
career for director Jean Rollin. Rape of The Vampire certainly isn't
Rollin's best film. The main faults deal with the second half of the
film. Although the style, eroticism, and atmosphere are fantastic
and shine in the latter portion, the story falls apart a bit for me.
The focus is shifted away from the sisters, which to me was the
strong focus, the centerpiece really, to the Vampire Queen. The
Vampire Queen really doesn't do it for me. Her character is loosely
drawn, and never works too well. While she has her strong
points-sense of purpose, striking looks, sex appeal - her downfall
is that the viewer isn't mentally aroused by her performance. Her
performance comes across as being too laid back, a woman with
her power should command more respect, which never comes to
light. Strong points for the film are fantastic acting, superb
direction, wonderful atmosphere, and nice eroticism (although
more restrained then later Rollin films). Rape Of The Vampire is
a shining example of why Euro Horror films are so amazing. Euro
Horror films excel because of wonderful imagery, unmatched
atmosphere, memorable plots and plot twists, gore (in some films
and sub-genres), wonderful scores, and direction. I suggest if at
all possible that you track down this DVD presentation, as I
believe Jean Rollin is a wonderful visionary, who is a master at
his craft.
