Now curious, I didn't know Nacho Cerda was making this english-spoken full-lenght movie (I don't read the horror press, at all :-P).

Reviews are not uniformly good ("...style in search of a movie..." Village Voice, not surprisingly), but click anyway - if it really annoys me I'll ditch his sophomore effort.

Thanks KJ + LPD :beerchug:

Slight variations on an story we've seen a gozzillion of times (Álex de la Iglesia's The Baby's Room was a much better try...) and worst of all it's not scary. Worster still  possibly Cerda thinks that framing his characters from weird angles, hovering the camera over their heads or generally using impossible subjective shoots is a way to make the haunted house come alive, watching over like a uncanny presence but... to me it's only the confirmation that Cerda is a lousy director.

I sympathize with the anti-family slant, but it's not exactly new in the horror genre.

While I hated it while I was watching, I must admit that the condensed memory of it hasn't a bad taste. So it was not a real pooper maybe, after all.

I liked it. Style-wise it was grimy enough to be different and I was never bothered by any of the camera angles. The acting was passable. The plot wasn't the greatest. My girlfriend was scratching her head at the end, but it worked for me. Best thing I can say is that its creepy and has a few scares. I can't really say that about too many movies nowadays.

I was a bit disappointed after watching this new Cerdà's flick. The movie is decent, but it suffers from a boring and full-of-clichès plot, mediocre acting and a gratuitous gore scene which makes no sense at that point. I loved Genesis and Aftermath, I loved the style Cerdà put into his works, but The Abandoned seems to me just a flick made for a commercial audience

Usually the "8 films to die for" are 8 shits except for an occasional gem, but this one rather stood out. I actually liked it, to my surprise much more than I was either expecting to like it or what I was thinking about it after the first 10 or so minutes. The weird and unsteady camera angles may be just bad camera work, but surprisingly I didn't mind them much -- in fact they kind of helped the weird, uncertain atmosphere (again, I don't know if that was the intention, but that's how it came out for me). Would've been even better if this wasn't another one where they for whatever reason put some Cyrillic letters together with Roman ones to make up some nonsensical, unpronounceable words. That just makes the credits look silly and childish.

Agreed with Truba that the place being Russia had very little if any impact on the story and could've just as well being Anytown, USA. The "Russians" being Bulgarian and almost no Russian being spoken didn't help matter. The "weird Russia" didn't add anything and actually came out looking lame and fake (not as fake as the usual laughable American Movie Russia, but still fake), so it would be much better left out.

Overall however solid 6/10 for me and that's saying a lot. Probably the best of the bunch I've watched recently.
