That's one of the things I mentioned earlier about misconceptions about widescreen. People assume that any pan and scan labelled movie is missing a load of picture info from the left and right (which is true for a 4:3 version of a 2.35 movie filmed anamorphically), when in fact if it is a 1.85 ratio movie then very likely it has been shot soft matted and they are missing very little at the sides (and maybe a sound boom or two) and gaining quite a lot top and bottom.

I know I used to think this.

when I ripped it it spat out 16x9 in Dvd2avi..

I think you missed the problem, my bad.

the 4:3 is pan/scan, the 16:9 is allegedly cropped from the pan/scan:
Image

Blue = what it should be
White = pan/scan
green = what MGM has allegedly done

As you can see you wouldn't know, that's why MGM is being sued, they have been misleading about it being widescreen, since widescreen hints at the original frame size, but it isn't you see...

err... anyway, like MC says I guess its not best to post, but I just spotted this is one of the titles, and your edition of the dvd is allegedly one of the problem cases listed, and it annoys me to hell that MGM has done this! Its still an ongoing trial, but I would strongly urge you register for a free dvd anyway, its a toll free number, and you are eligable, having fraudulently been sold a DVD which you thought was the original widescreen filmed, but its not :(

There's a thread in smalltalk now, and scifi, we can discuss it out of this thread, probably for the better.

@MCM, no mosaic pictures really do PAN/SCANS, I have some... they aren't open matte, I assure you of this. They've been doing it since god only knows when, and continued it onto their DVD masters. ;)

You have to also remember that I did plenty of research on this disc as I mainly got it for tentacles. The international version is the same AR as the dual disc I got. Those of you that will remember I had ripped the pan and scan of tentacles off of vhs and then went out and got the international version only to find out the audio was in nothing but Italian and I was trying to dub the vhs sound into the DvD version....then this came out and all my work was for nothing.
If MGM is actually trying to pass of 4:3 matte as 16x9 then they should be sued..and rightfully so as that is false advertising. You would think they would realise that before putting the product out in the first place.

Very true,I ripped the Shreik show vesion and then checked out at midnight after I released it and was like..."Goddamn it! Shriek show did me again!"
Shriek is notorious for this kind of shit...that and the fact they sell stuff off as uncut and it really isn't.

Yup, just demonstrating what MGM are accused of doing for all to see.

Sorry dxa, looks like the plan to move the talk out of the thread failed  At least you got a bump from it!

Heheh...no prob...This is very interesting anyway....I had no idea about MGM doing this kind of thing.I do know that the International version of tentacles and the dual disc release of it are the same since I compared them very closely.Took me a second to understand what you were talking about but I get you now.Even if it says 16:9 it doesn't mean it is.Kind of like if it says it is uncut..it doesn't mean that there isn't another more uncut version out there..i.e. Anchor Bay or Shriek Show. And to think I thought Paramount were the #1 assholes on the market..this sort of shit really erks me.

Shouldn't that be:

?

ah well, bless 'em :wacky:

I never got why they use the english title as filenames for dubbed films (with no indication of dubbing), yet people rename the english soundtrack file to a seemingly non-english filename. Surely its more logical to keep english = english filename, german = german filename, spanish = spanish filename, and so on.

Well I do have a pan and scan version of this movie that I can compare too..as well as tentacles...I'll find them and get back to you for screen shots comparisons.Should be interesting. :)
I am thinking that has not been done to tentacles though...as I remember beeing blown away by the difference betwen the fullscreen and the widescreen versions.

The Rocky films all have a 1.85 ratio. Never trust a TV station to show a movie properly!

The widescreen DVD shows much more information at the sides, and the same amount top and bottom, which is correct.

It looks like the VHS was panned and scanned from the widescreen version. If they used that for the widescreen DVD and cropped it top and bottom, it would cut off the top of the creature's head and we still wouldn't see the second man on the boat. But we do on the widescreen, so in this case MGM's claim of widescreen showing more picture is true!

Aha, it seems video-man posted his screenshot anamorphically squeezed, distorting the ratio from 2.35 to 1.85.

So the 4:3 is a pan and scan of the original ratio, with picture missing from both sides, not the widescreen version shown open matte with more information top and bottom.

The widescreen version wins hands down in this case!
