It's rare that dvds have true NTSC on them (I don't own any). Has anyone finshed this and is in a position to check?

ah yep, you guys are right. I woke up today on 99.2%....Im new to this eMule thing (been a bittorrent man for a while but could never find old movies like this site has), Ive had the program on for 5 straight days now (with a high ID and have uploaded 13.5 GB, and my average download speed has been around 40 kb/s)....I guess I just need to be patient and wait my turn in the queue cycle to get the final .8% I need, which I am currently 27th in the QR).

at least 90% of NTSC DVDs you have to force film in dgindex if you wan't a proper rip

http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dgindex.htm

Quote:
Frame Rate = 29.970 fps: Let the preview run for a couple of minutes, then take a look at the Video Type: If it's FILM at a percentage higher or equal to 95% or if it only shows FILM you can activate Forced FILM as shown below. Otherwise you will have to perform IVTC (that process will be explained later on).

Frame Rate = 23.976 fps: This is the result of activating Forced FILM for an NTSC movie. If the Video Type is FILM or FILM at a percentage higher or equal to 95% you're all set. If the percentage is lower or the type is NTSC then you have to set Field Operation to None and perform IVTC (that process will be explained later on).

@brohmabull79
did you have subs to go with that italian rip ?

Which leaves a whopping 10%
You know it is possible...Looks like I am gonna have to burn this sucker and see for myself if its properly done or not  I just did a few true NTSC films....So I know for a fact that it gets done..and not just on TV content. In MOST cases you want to go 23.97...but not EVERY case.Trust me on this....I actually have been doing this for a good while now.

Looks like most of my NTSC rips are wrong then. I've not checked the guides for a long time and it used to say apply forced FILM if it's 29.970 fps which is what I've been doing all along.

yeah i was gonna say 99% but i knew you'd be answering this eh eh ;)
it's true that there are a few exceptions, but they are quite rare, and usually with poorly produced dvds (i heard)
you see quite a few because you are interested in underground movies mainly i guess
just a question though, those true NTSC films, do they actually show as 100% NTSC in DGindex ?
cause i've never seen any of those... (probably cause i rip PAL mainly)

Yikes...yeah....at the very least some probably needed an IVTC instead of a forced film....It is all about counting frames and looking carefully at the interlaced content.
What I have been doing recently is making test files for all 3 options when It comes to ntsc. One for forced film, one for ivtc and one for interlaced ntsc...Somethimes I'll try different interlacing tests too. That way it is prety hard to go wrong with what your options are going to be.It may take a half hour out of my time....but better time wasted then a rip nuked for wrong encoding. :D

Yep...they show up as NTSC and interlaced frames...no percentages even added or even shown.most of the time when it flips back and forth like that to NTSC and then film in DGindex it will be an IVTC.
And yeah...it is true..the lower the source the more chance you are gonna run into this sort of thing...except last night....guess I might as well anounce this one coming now....We did a rip of the new release fo Mandingo...the movie comes from Digital Exploitation as the source. After Fighting and fighting with it I finally had to resolve that it WAS an NTSC and did the rip accordingly...looks great....every other option I tried produced serious stuttering or obvious left in interlacing.
By the way...I never really pay attention to what DGIndex spits out anymore for me..it is frequently wrong....I did that movie last night and it was a 16:9 but DGIndex reported 4:3.Doing another movie right now that DID require an IVTC but that spit out another true ntsc format at me.No progressive frames or anything it said. That is why it is best to kind of do it yourself and make sure.I actually went to spud about Mandingo cause I was so frustrated. He made a comment that has resinated with me since he made it....It is all so true.

Fortunately most of my rips have been PAL, not had any complaints about the few that were NTSC :D

Yeah.....If I get a choice it is always PAL....NTSC is just lame.Unfortunately my choices are limited to where I go for my stuff and special order imports if I want PAL. :wacky:
To be honest though George....I don't remember any bad rips you ever have done...If they have been LQ it is becuase of the source material you are working with and not the encode so I think you are pretty well safe on all that. :beerchug: STR knows all about low quality sources

nope, it was just an italian language version. If you search eMule it will bring up that version with something like 60 available I dont exactly remember (Umberto Lenzi - Mangiati Vivi - 1980 - Versione Integrale.avi)
