It has taken me over 10 years to trace another decent copy of this amazingly creepy Italian clssic. Taken from the obscure Japanese release, this version is fully uncut, dubbed in English with burned in Japanese Subtitles.

Reviews:

This is one of the better sub-Argento giallo thrillers. It is quite a well-budgeted film. This shows through in its classy photography and the fact that it has gone on location in Budapest (and makes the most of them) - and it only really in its plotting and theme that it relapses to a B film. Throughout director Giagni conjures a quite effective atmosphere of building dis-ease - of swings that were occupied a moment ago now swaying emptily, of balls eerily bouncing into shot, people in the background in restaurants and the street turning to look at the hero or muttering to themselves, the heroine who persists in posing provocatively in the nude in front of her window. The plot revelation of the spider cult comes fairly way out and with some resultingly quite outre images - like the mysterious woman who attacks victims, leaping onto them like a spider or hanging from the ceiling and drawing them up to her with a tendril of webbing from her mouth; and the wild image of the girl who is woken in the night, finding herself in a maze of sheets where she is stabbed through the forehead while her screaming face presses out against one of the sheets. There is a climax which suffers from cheesy effects but nevertheless remains potent for the bizarreness of the image of a human face transforming into a spider creature which then implants a spider inside the bound hero?s wrist. A film of admirably unusual atmosphere.

wow! I'm all over this it looks freakin awesome. Although I do have a few questions about the quality if you don't mind. Are those white bits and boarders in the screenshots just from the way you took the shots or is it not cropped?

Either way I'm downloading it, but if the res is 352 including the boarders it might be hard to watch.

Many thanks :beerchug:

Jiv3Hu5tlerFunK, are you sure that this version is uncut? according to imdb the runtime should be 120 min.

apart from that i think i could come up with a better rip. cause just like you a friend of mine was looking for this jewell for quite some time and found and bought a dvd(r) somewhere. i'm not sure what language it is (though i think it's in english), how long the movie is and from what source (probably vhs). but i can tell you these things tomorrow.

so if you don't mind and other people would appreciate it, i could make a new rip of this one. :beerchug:

Hey folx

OK a couple of questions answered, the wee white lines you see are just the artifacts of the screen capture tool i used, not part of the picture :)

Also this rip is actually from the DVDR that Spudthedestroyer is waiting on. Unless fo course the source of that one is better than the one used for mine :)

As for the running time of 120mins on IMDB !!!! Don't we know better than to believe what the IMDB says about non mainstream movies?

Ciao

my friends dvdr is the same version as the above: english dubbed with burned in japanese subtitles, uncut as well. so i guess we'll just leave it the way it is.

Haven't started the other one yet. I'd go for the new one. Rather spread better quality any day.

hey I noticed that the filesizes seem a bit small.

What you need to aim for is 700mb, especially given the length of the movie.

With a length of nearly 90mins, you really need to aim for a full cd. With this, and full cropping, encoding with Xvid is the best option. With a framesize of no lower than 512x (if you do the quality is reduced too much when resizing to full screen, you loose a lot of detail and introduce encoding artifacts which is why bigger res. is more favourable), and using mp3 128kbit VBR (rather than CBR), you should get a nice result.

If you encode using those specs, you should see a vast improvement in the quality of the encode.

There's detailed guides over at http://www.doom9.org if you need help. They are simple yet comprehensive, and should yeild sigificant improvements.

I myself use gknot, I've not used autogknot much, but i think it should be pretty simple to sort out the filesize issue.
:)

What's the adavantage from VBR over CBR? I had originally did that with my re-encode but Vdubmod kept giving me an error with my audio("Virtualdub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding...."
"Decompress the entire audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and
recompress with a constant birate encoder." ) but when i switched to CBR the error disappeared.

that's why you use nandub when dealing with audio streams ;)

The question is, what's the point of even using CBR? CBR is poorer quality, and (normally) a larger filesize, it has no advantage over VBR and is pretty much redundant.

CBR assigns a Constant BitRate, whether the audio at any given time requires more or less than this constant, therefore, the bitrate is wasted on near silence and not enough on loud sound. The overall result is then oversized and poor quality.

VBR assigns a Variable BitRate, when the audio at a given time requires no real data, be it silence or whatever, the minimum bit is assigned to that given time, and when the audio requires alot of data to record the sound properally receives more data (ie. 128 can range from 64 (or less) to 164 (or more), depending on what you set the range to).

Therefore when you use CBR, you are wasting data that is better spent other wise (ahem, video), and using a poorer quality audio track. VBR means a smaller filesize and a better quality audio track.

The rule of thumb is, don't use CBR... period (okay there's some rare exceptions, but this isn't worth mentioning). This is one of the times I agree with the TDX guidelines (what release groups have to abide by or get nuked) that very tactfully says something like "NEVER USE CBR.... USE ONLY VBR"

hey, now i know exactly what happened yesterday, when i watched some low quality 'tales from the crypt' eps (68 and 69). first, the sound was fine, but then someone was screaming or there was some other loud noise and afterwards the volume was suddenly very low, so that i almost didn't understand people talking. after a few minutes everything went back to normal just to start again at another loud part.

now that i read your explanations i checked the files with gknot and what do you know, the audio is CBR. :matrix:
