Hidden in the clearing of a forest, a deep-voiced man is picnicking with two kilted schoolgirls. A music box-like soundtrack plays as one girl does a seductive dance. He smiles.

Minutes later he suggests some light bondage, and the viewer knows this will end badly. There’s a thud, pitiful whimpering, hair matted with blood, an unknown voyeur.

It sounds sadistic, but the opening scenes of the new six-part series Durham County are simply the launching point for plot twists that probe the grittiest corners of the psyche until necrophilia seems almost normal.

“It’s very dark. In fact, I’m constantly surprised that it’s being aired on television,” says writer and co-creator Laurie Finstad Knizhnik (Bliss, Cold Squad). “It’s much more in keeping with the new programming on HBO, The Sopranos and Six Feet Under.”

yeah it got steadily worse for me and ended up much more normal than the 1st ep had hinted at and the publicity had promised.

Just got around to watching this series. Its not as twisted or dark as it looks at the beginning, but what a great show. Top notch writing and directing and great atmostphere come together to create something worth watching. Great show, but more of a Sopranos with cops and killers than a horror show.
