A British anthology series featuring tales of horror, mystery and suspense. Most episodes featured a twist ending, and many of them were based on short stories by well–known writer Roald Dahl, who also served as the show's host during its first two seasons.

Dahl's introductory words to "Man From the South", which was the first episode:

"Do you know what keeps haunting me with just about every paragraph I write when I'm doing a story? It's the thought that the reader's interest is easily lost. That's why, as a kind of insurance, I often try to create severe tension among the characters … so that, hopefully, every reader will be compelled to go on reading or the viewer to go on viewing. The one coming up now is a tension story, and if any of you switch it off before it's over you'll be punching me right on the nose. I hope you won't do that."

A wise man believes only in lies, trusts only in the absurd, and learns to expect, the unexpected.

So began each episode of a new British anthology show in the late 1970's when it hit American television. Ron Grainer’s theme song quickly followed. A light would turn on the various features of the faces of wooden horses in a carousel as each line was read, then when the theme kicked in, the horses would suddenly be on their ever-circling journey to nowhere. So were the opening credits in the American copies of this series.

With only the original and slightly racier British credits in tow, the greatest anthology series in British TV history has stunningly, shockingly, and amazingly arrived on DVD. Acorn Media has issued Roald Dahl’s Tales Of The Unexpected in a four-DVD set that covers all the episodes hosted by Dahl himself! The series would run eleven seasons, but he was there for the first two and was writer of just about all of them, save five shows. Eventually, it was called Tales Of The Unexpected with Roald Dahl before Dahl’s name was dropped altogether and John Houseman took over as host of stories most not written by Dahl.

Produced on PAL-format analog videotape, this is the most literate anthology series in the Horror/Thriller genre since Rod Serling’s original Twilight Zone and it has the writing, stars and crew to back it up. It is also one of the all-time classics of British TV.

For our joy, the three first seasons are available and complete! What is unfortunately not true for the rest of the series. The first four seasons have been fully edited on DVD, but most of the rippers bought incomplete Acorn Media boxsets. So too bad, but we may not find the 112 episodes before a while. Anyway, here's what I've found (others may come, you never know...).
All credits and thanks go to the rippers : UDF for the two first seasons, danieldrader for seasons three, four, five & six coming soon and 1717alan for the latest episodes of the show. Thank you. Please, go on - demonoid.com - to visit them and be grateful for the work they've done.

Spud's wishes, the plots, the screens, the links ecaetera:

Seasons 3 and 4

Nicholas Sheffo from - Fulvue Drive-in - about the second set wrote:
Though his name was being put below the title at one point, Roald Dahl stayed on for Tales Of The Unexpected a little while longer than remembered and Acorn Media has issued another solid four-DVD set that covers a few more shows hosted by Dahl himself. Sometimes dubbed Tales Of The Unexpected with Roald Dahl, Seasons 3, 4 & most of 5 fill these next four DVDs as predicted.

Seasons 5 and 6

Nicholas Sheffo again and always from Fulvue Drive-in, about the third set wrote:
Acorn Media has decided to continue releasing Tales Of The Unexpected as Roald Dahl’s Tales Of The Unexpected, as Set Three arrives with a new look, new artwork and slender cases replacing the full-sized cases. The first problem is that the remaining episodes from Season Five are not here in this new set. What happened to them? The other reason to keep Dahl’s name, though Dahl wrote none of these shows, is in case the Quinn Martin show of the same name from 1978 ever is issued on DVD. At this time, remarkably, none of his hit series have made it to DVD.

Skipping shows with the likes of Tony Franciosa, Shirley Knight, Gary Burghoff, Joanna Pettet, Dick Smothers, Sharon Gless, Fritz Weaver and Carol Lynley, one asks if it was a matter of rights or have these shows been lost?

Produced on PAL-format analog videotape, the show wanted to continue its commercial success it had established early on. It did, but the show was starting to run into troubles simply from the grind of weekly TV, even if it was an anthology show. The clever twists began to become repetitious at this point and the show was going into decline, something that can be said despite the missing shows.

  • Taste
here are six people eating a fine dinner at the house of Mike Schofield, a London stockbroker: Mike, his wife and daughter, an unnamed narrator and his wife, and a wine connoisseur, Richard Pratt. Pratt often makes small bets with Schofield to guess what wine is being served at the table, but during the night in the story he is uninterested, instead attempting to socialize with Schofield's eighteen-year-old daughter, Louise.
When Schofield brings the second wine of the night he remarks that it will be impossible to guess where it is from, but Pratt takes that as a challenge. The tough talk on both sides leads the two to increase the bet until Pratt declares that he would like to bet for the hand of Schofield's daughter in marriage--if he loses, he will give Schofield both of his houses. Though his wife and daughter are understandably horrified, Mike eventually convinces them to accept the bet--it is too good a deal to pass up, especially since the wine will be impossible to identify.
However, Pratt proceeds to name the district, commune, vineyard, and the year of the wine (though Mike doesn't turn over the bottle, his reaction appears to be one of disbelief that Pratt could've guessed correctly). At this moment, however, the maid walks in and returns to Pratt his glasses, which he had left on the cabinet in the study earlier in the evening where the bottle had been left out to reach room temperature. (Pratt had picked out this place in the study on an earlier visit as the ideal place to sit the wine--his glasses being left there reveals that he knew the wine in advance and cheated on the bet.) The story ends with Mike starting to get angry and his wife telling him to calm down.

  • Man from the South
A man offers an American boy his Cadillac if the boy can strike a lighter ten times in a row. The catch is that if he cannot, his finger will be cut off.
This short story was remade as an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents by the same name. It was also the inspiration for the Quentin Tarantino-directed segment of the 1995 film Four Rooms.

  • Parson's Pleasure
Mr Cyril Boggis is an antique dealer in Chelsea, London. He does not have a large shop, but he still manages to make a profit each year by buying the most remarkable pieces of furniture at very low prices and selling them for large profits. His friends in the trade wonder where he finds such rare items so regularly. It turns out that Mr Boggis's scheme is rather simple: he dresses up as a clergyman and visits English farmhouses under the pretenses of writing articles for the Society for the Preservation of Rare Furniture. When he finds something valuable, he makes the person an offer and then sells the item in his shop for twenty times as much.
On this particular trip he is travelling the county of Buckinghamshire and comes across three locals (Claud, Bert, and Rummins) near a dirty, ramshackle farmhouse. Once he convinces them to let him inside, he is astonished to see a Chippendale Commode standing in the living room. The Commodes were made by the famous 18th-century furniture maker Thomas Chippendale, and only three others were known to be in existence. Boggis nearly faints when he realises that this piece could fetch up to twenty thousand pounds in an auction. He recovers, though, and mentions that he needs a new set of legs for a table he has at home. The ones on the commode, he says, would just fit. Rummins is doubtful, and so Boggis cons him into thinking that the piece is simply a worthless Victorian reproduction. He finally ends up purchasing the commode for the grand total of twenty pounds.
After he leaves to get his car, the three men decide to help him out by cutting the legs off for him. Rummins also speculates that the parson might cancel the deal if he cannot fit the entire piece into his car (he does not know that Boggis has a station wagon), so Claud takes an axe and breaks the commode to pieces. "I'll tell you one thing," he says. "That was a bloody good carpenter put this job together and I don't care what the parson says." At that moment, Mr Boggis drives up in his car.

  • Nunc Dimittis
When the wealthy Lionel Lampson learns that his younger girlfriend Janet thinks him, among other things, a "crashing bore," he devises an elaborate revenge. He visits the artist John Royden and asks him to paint Janet's portrait with the stipulation that she not know who has commissioned it. Royden has an unusual method: He paints his subjects nude and then adds every layer of clothing one at a time. When the portrait is completed, Lionel (who just happens to be skilled at restoring and cleaning paintings) removes the top layer of paint, exposing Janet in her underclothes. He then stages a dinner party for Janet and some of society's elite, where, at the end of the candle-lit meal, the lights are suddenly turned on and the painting is revealed for all to see. Lionel unobservedly leaves the room (but not before seeing the stunned look on Janet's face) and slips away to his house in the country, basking in the success of his scheme. A few days later he receives a container of excellent caviare along with a letter from Janet saying that she forgives him and still loves him. Not being able to resist his favorite food, Lionel indulges himself and, by the end of the story, begins to feel violently ill. The implication is that Lionel has been poisoned, perhaps fatally, by Janet.

No probleme buddy, I know you're having a hard time with all your pictures on Filehigh, so take your time and good luck !

I've started only the season 1 to 4 for the moment, there is some source for season1 & 2, but the 3 and 4, zero...

I was sure there was an episode called 'The Monkey's Paw'. I loved that episode (if it was TOTU) - the one were the mother and father have 3 wishes and their son ends up getting killed because they wished for an amount of money, that just so happened to be the exact amount insurance on his death.......and it goes on from there. Anyone remember this at all. I was certain it was the first series as I remember the first episode here very clearly when it first aired.

I think you have your answer, Killing... ;)

I wish I could help you to get it, wherever the episode comes from (Roald Dahl's series or not) but it's unavailable.

I'm working on a thread for Alfred Hitchcock's series ("presents", "Hours" and "Suspicion"), will let you know if I find something somewhere.

For the moment, don't have the one you're looking for.

Fuckin' Nick (and the others interested by Roald Dahl's stuff), again, please wait a bit (nothing to do with Filehigh, the threads will look shite for a moment, will update them later, when time will be on my side), I really need my pipe for other games... ;)

Le Frog's not be around for a while, and he's not redone any of his threads. He also appears not to be sharing this one any more :(

The first 4 series are posted on the newsgroups, those with access can get them from there. :beerchug:

I don't think the hashes are the same tho

Le Frog last posted Oct 3rd.

He's probably still celebrating the Rugby win :)
