Plot:
Based on the infamous novel by Leopold Sacher-Masoch this fine film follows the perverted passions of a young couple as Severin (Régis Vallée) watches the beautiful Wanda (Laura Antonelli) writhing naked amongst furs. His disturbing peeping tomism triggers off a whirlpool of emotions due to a childhood episode which punishes voyeurism with pain.

Plot summary



Severin, an obsessive voyeur, craves to be whipped and humiliated following a childhood trauma. He spies on his beautiful neighbour Wanda, masturbating nude in furs and discovers she's happily aware of being watched. After marriage her, Severin moulds Wanda into the perfect vessel for his fantasies, goading her into sex with strangers while he watches. Happy at first, Wanda comes to resent his games and rebels. Reborn as an unstoppable love monster she beds a succession of mustachioed hunks and drives Severin away.

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and the masochism



Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch (1836–1895) was an Austrian writer and journalist, who gained renown at his time and who was seen by some as a potential successor to Goethe and often compared to Turgenev. His most famous book was the novel VENUS IN FURS. The term masochism was coined in 1886 by the Austrian psychiatrist von Krafft-Ebing, which up to his time was quite unknown to the scientific world. During recent years facts have been advanced which prove that Sacher-Masoch was not only the poet of Masochism, but that he himself was afflicted with this anomaly. Masochism is nowadays the abnormal behavior characterized by deriving sexual gratification from being subjected to pain. More loosely, masochism refers to deriving any pleasure from experiencing pain.

VENUS IN FURS is a wicked slice of classic Euro sleaze, featuring oodles of the lovely Laura's naked flesh, tremendous use of fabulous Spanish locations and a typically music of Gianfranco Reverberi. Whether Roman Polanski has seen Dallamano's film or read the Sacher-Masoch novel, it's obvious that he was familiar with this material, as there's more than an echo of this movie in his 1992 film, BITTER MOON. Shameless' disc clocks in at 82:06, suffering some cuts by the BBFC: the scene in question is that of a sexual assault culminating in the depiction of the victim enjoying her experience. Kudos to Shameless, as they've edited the film in a way that does not jar as the scene simply fades to black--and speaking as someone that's not seen the film before--the cuts don't seem to detract from the enjoyment of the film at all. Shameless' disc is presented in anamorphic 2.35:1 and looks very good when you consider the age and obscurity of the film itself. Colours are reproduced well for the most part and there's little in the way of print damage. The sound is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and is well balanced and serves the English language dialogue and score well.
