Real life Serial Killer based movies

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_killer
Serial Killers are individuals who, on multiple occasions spread out through time, murder victims who are generally unknown to them beforehand. Their crimes are committed as a result of a compulsion that, in many but not all cases, has roots in the killer's (often dysfunctional) youth, as opposed to those who are motivated by financial gain (e.g., contract killers) or ideological/political motivations (e.g., terrorists). Many times, this compulsion is linked to the individual's sexual drive.

The term "serial killer" was coined either by FBI agent Robert Ressler or by Dr. Robert D. Keppel (the credit for the term is still disputed) in the 1970s so that criminologists could distinguish those who claim victims over a long period of time from those who claim multiple victims at once (mass murderers). A third type of multiple killer is a spree killer.

The following are brief definitions of these three types:

  • A serial killer is someone who commits three or more murders over an extended period of time with cooling-off periods in between. In between their crimes, they appear to be quite normal, a state which Hervey Cleckley and Robert Hare call the "mask of sanity." There is frequently?but not always?a sexual element to the murders.
  • A mass murderer, on the other hand, is an individual who kills three or more people in a single event and in one location. The perpetrators sometimes commit suicide, meaning knowledge of their state of mind and what triggers their actions is often left to more speculation than fact. Mass murderers who are caught sometimes claim they cannot clearly remember the event.
  • A spree killer commits multiple murders in different locations over a period of time that may vary from a few hours to several days. Unlike serial killers, however, they do not revert to their normal behavior in between slayings.

All of the above types of crimes are usually carried out by solitary individuals. There have been examples in all three categories whereby two or more perpetrators have acted together. Author Michael Newton states that this happens in about a third of the cases. Lee Boyd Malvo and John Muhammad are prime examples. Both are known for the Beltway sniper attacks

Serial killers are generally, but not always, male. Noted female exceptions include Aileen Wuornos, Myra Hindley and Erzs?bet B?thory.

Serial killers are specifically motivated by a variety of psychological urges, primarily power and sexual compulsion. They feel inadequate and worthless, often owing to humiliation and abuse in childhood or the pressures of poverty and low socioeconomic status in adulthood, and their crimes give them a feeling of power, both at the time of the actual killing and also afterwards. The knowledge that their actions terrify entire communities and often baffle police adds to this sense of power. This motivational aspect separates them from contract killers and other multiple murderers who are motivated by profit. For example, in Scotland during the 1820s, William Burke and William Hare murdered people in what became known as the "Case of the Body Snatchers." They would not count as serial killers by most criminologists' definitions, however, because their motive was financial. Of course, people do things for multiple motivations.

In many cases, a serial killer will plead not guilty by reason of insanity in a court of law. This defense is almost uniformly unsuccessful. The legal definition of insanity is based on whether the defendant knows the difference between right and wrong; the level of premeditation and the lack of any obvious delusions or hallucinations necessary to successfully commit multiple murders without getting caught make this defense extremely difficult.

The United States Bureau of Justice Statistics defines a serial killing as: "[involving] the killing of several victims in three or more separate events." This definition is especially close to that of a spree killer, and perhaps the primary difference between the two is that a serial killer has a cooling-off period. They will commit a murder and temporarily feel sated until they feel their homicidal urges resurface. The time period between murders can vary between a few days to several years and will often decrease the longer the offender goes uncaught. For example, Jeffrey Dahmer murdered his second victim nine years after his first, but his last eight victims were murdered in a span of just seven months. Spree killers, on the other hand, do not have a cooling-off period and are in a state of constant hunting until they are caught or killed, even though their murder spree may sometimes extend to a period of several months.

Serial killers frequently have extreme sadistic urges. Ones who lack the ability to empathize with the suffering of others are frequently called psychopathic or sociopathic, terms which have been renamed among professional psychologists as antisocial personality disorder. Some serial killers engage in lust and torture murder, loosely defined terms involving, respectively, mutilation for sexual pleasure and killing victims slowly over a prolonged period of time.

Review: Van Bebber tries to tell the story of how everything was for the family members, with little or no focus on Manson himself. A nice attempt in all, but he sometimes gapes to high and chokes on his own artistic integrity.

Dahmer (2002)

Review: Not a very good movie. First of all it's very boring. It fails to give an insight into Dahmer's mind but instead only documents some of his actions, and doins so with great flaws. Download the 'Profilers' release by Kat to see what I'm talking about. Also, this had the potential to be a thouroughly terrifying experience without over-dramatizing or using too much gore simply because the actual events in themselves are so horrible and though to take. Instead it apears the creators tried to ponder about the reasons for his seamingly unexplained insanity, but their quest does not offer any explaination or possible motivation, and therefore fails dreadfully.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)

Review: This is one of the best in this whole collection. Not trying to be a realistic recreation, but rather a dramatization of what Henry Lee Lucas and Otis Toole could have been like.

Review: Mediocre film not focussing so much on the murders, but rather just various episodes in his seamingly normal life. Kind of fail because it can't decide what genre it want to stick with, be it murder mysterie, drama or horror.

Review: It's not one documentary but actually 4. It's only the first one that is about the real life profilers that have been made famous by recent years tv-series. It's quite facinating and informative and very well crafted. When it's finished you feel like a kid who suddenly knows what he wants to be when he grows up. What's strange though is that I've seen this before aired on tv, but then it was longer, and I remember specific scenes which were not in here. These weren't gory scenes or anything, but still it seams like this has in fact been cut down to shorten it or something, I guess. The next one is all about Jefrey Dahmer. Very in depth and brings forth several 'reasons' to the tragic outcome of his insanity. Facts presented show just how bad the 2002 'Dahmer' movie is, as too much of that is purley adapted truth. Alot of good footage is included in this one however. Several scenes from his trial are quite upsetting, to be honest. The closing comments force upon you an extreme feeling of empathy towards the victim's family. This is the kind of documentar I like to see. Next comes Gacy. I don't know if the order these are put are actually like this on the dvd, but I think it's kinda reversed as Gacy does not succeed in shocking so much after having vitnessed the monstrous Dahmer. Gacy was indeed no Pope himself though. His complete deniance of any feeling of guilt or even recognition of wrongdoing is upsetting to say the least. But still, this one had a little to much story telling and too many names to keep track of in such a short time (45 mins). Finally comes the story of Charles Manson's Family. An intriguing piece with fabolous interviews with two former family members in addition to the man himself offcource. Although it's also very interesting, I'm sorry to say it is far from perfect. It relies to much on the interviews and has way to high tempo in telling the story. 45 mins is nowhere near enough to really get into the whole ordeal. There's simply too much info. I really missed more background on what it was like to be part of the family and maybe some re-enactments?

Review: Very good documentary which can almost compare to 'Bowling For Collumbine' exepct it doesn't have Michael Moore. Some excellent rare clips from Jonestown amoung others. It gets a little slower towards the end and kind of rails off, but never-the-less this is a 'must-see'.

Deranged (1974)

You did miss this one, Deranged is based on Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein. Out of all the films based on Gein's exploits, Deranged follows his life most closely.

eh,
i got a dvd of one of those 'jack the ripper' from the 1970's. I havent watched it yet, but i guess i may have to. I wonder how far some of these movies go beyond 'true fact' to 'entertainment/artistic liscence'.

also i think i got a few tapes/documentaries of most of the above killers, and somewere an interview of Geraldo Riviera with Charles Manson. Got to search though, real life horror isnt my cup o' tea.

WHOOHOO!!!
Finally a movie about my 'favorite' killer.

Can't wait to see it. hope it's as good as the Ted Bundy one, and not as hopeless as the Dahmer one.

I heard many negative opinions about it, but I've never seen it myself.
