Are ISP's newsgroups any good - I'd always assumed they were crap? I had a giganews link with Pipex (which according to that list above is supposed to have it's own). Now I'm with NTL I haven't tried theirs yet as I've a newshosting account. But I'm assured it's not that good either compared to a paid-for account.

Well i only use my ISPs newsgroups and I do alright, if they are pushing on for a week its likely i'll have a lot of red, and if its HDTV i can pretty much count it out since it will have more reds than pars.

Something like a tv episode i can get for days after its posted, and horror movies i can get as long as they aren't more than 3 or 4 days over I've not had a problem with but have needed a couple of pars.

So as long as you keep on top of nzbs daily its fine, which is why i wish more people posted horror nzbs

Paid accounts give you far, far better retention and flexibility. You can miss an nzb and then still expect it to be alive a week or so water. They are more convenient.

Who is recommended for paid Newsgroup access?

I use usenetserver. They're shite, but they're VERY cheap and whilst you need pars on pretty much everything, it does all complete

No problems at all with Newshosting. Retention has been increased and some users report 70 days.

Same as Spud I only use my ISP's and do OK. For me a premium server wouldnt be worth the extra due to how much I get via my ISP's.

If I didnt get a free server I'd pay for sure. You just feel freeer via usenet not waiting on when someone else sends you the data like p2p or having to keep within a torrent sites ratio for everything you grab. Basicly you use half as much bandwith cause your not using your upstream, so your even making your isp happy.

You do need pars sometimes but I don't see that as a problem.

I use giganews.. go for giganews and forget about all

However.. some scene releases end up in red with all and the pars

There's a solution to this though:

Download the torrent and don't download it yet

Grab your downloaded rars and copy them (don't move) to the torrents

Have your torrent app re-check the files

It will tell you you need x mb maybe you're missing 15% of the whole torrent

Try to download the most incomplete rars and copy paste'em one by one to the usenets and have QuickPAR Auto-Verify

You'll be able to complete the file in no time even if you have damaged pars you'll be able to complete the whole thing thanks to torrents help

(Now you have actually found some use to the torrent system LOL)

I made recently a greasemonkey script.. well actually is a mod from another script) that makes it very easy to find for nzbs directly from IMDB (of course, it can have flaws, since it makes a search using the title from the imdb movie, and if title is written in a different language than the one posted, u might not get what you're looking for:

I'm planning to make some scripts.. well... actually modding some available (cause I have very little to no-knowledge in programming), to make imdb or other pages with more options

I dunno.. maybe modding the torrents one (again) to search for HHAH for the specified movie... that would be good

I have used two good news servers so far:

Usenetvault 150 days retention, works out at £8 to £9 a month.
Very good if you have a bad connection as they use ip block technology.

Giganews 240 days retention, Works out at £15 a month.
Very good for the money, but if you disconnet a lot, might have to wait up to 30 minutes to continue your downloads, as it takes a while for ip address to change on their servers.

But if you have a static ip address, then they are a must to go with, just for the retention alone.

As for isp's:

Most Isp's have a retention of 7 days, some upto 9 on the very popular binary groups.

I would stay well clear of Virgin Media though, they are severely crippling anyone who likes to download a lot.
