Ok, I did the compression test with the stock settings & it reported 139% in the red, I went to save & then in the xvid settings I loaded the jawor2cd matrix, then after setting the first & 2nd pass as above I hit encode. If I'd cancelled at this point could I have carried on with the jawor2cd as my default settings & redone a compression test ?

The settings you put in XviD first and second pass under Gknot's "Options" tab will stay as your default settings
The comptest remembers the setting of your last encode
And now try to run a comptest with V3HR as the matrix and these bvop settings:
Max consecutive b-vops: 2
Quantizer ratio : 1.30
Quantizer Offset: 1.00
and tell me what you get

ok, let it finish the encode then I'll let you know. Thanks for your tips
but can I ask 2 very basic questions?
what is a b-vop?
what is a quantisizer?
All I've noticed is the smaller the quantisizer the better on a 1 pass encode

I suck at theory and re-telling stuff peeps like USB etc. care to explain in detail... but I'll try in my own shitty way
B-vops are basically frames that have smaller size then regular P-frames without noticable loss in quality and thus we use em
Now if you don't have good compression, you're gonna get a LOT of b-frames, but those of worse quality, like q5 b-vops and above.
You have a good compression so setting the Quantizer ratio to 1.30, XviD will only go max q4 b-frames or maybe non at all, with only q2 P-frames and q3 b-frames....
LOL someone take over please

Hmmm I dunno but something seems strange with only 5% difference between v3hr and v3uhr
That sure got me soiled

Hmm, started over from scratch again this morning, new d2v, & with the V3UHR Rev2 matrix & this time, oddly enough, it compression tested at 75%. Its encoding now, bitrate is through the roof at over 2300kbps, thinking maybe I should just go for 1/6 dvd rip.

yes, as i mentioned your likely going overkill. I don't think its good practise to always go 1/3rd DVDr just because you can, especially if a movie is shitty
Do a 1/6th and see what you get.

which one? The high quality matrix? No, that's only suitable for overkill/high bitrate.
Try Jawors 1cd first, or similar.

ok, heres screens & specs of the 2 rips. Big rip above the small in both cases...
Code: | size: 1,486 MB (or 1,522,448 KB or 1,558,986,752 bytes) codec: XviD bit.: 2397 kb/s res: 704x384 (1.83:1) [=11:6] audio: ac3 (0x2000) Dolby Laboratories, Inc 192 kb/s (96/ch, stereo) CBR (48000 Hz) Matrix: V3UHR Rev2 |
Code: | size: 742 MB (or 760,044 KB or 778,285,056 bytes) codec: XviD bitr.: 1097 kb/s res: 704x384 (1.83:1) [=11:6] audio: ac3 (0x2000) Dolby Laboratories, Inc 192 kb/s (96/ch, stereo) CBR (48000 Hz) Matrix: Jawors 1CD |
Now which should be released?

Important question (No I'm not buying an X-Box)
Standalone compatibility. What is it that stops an XVID playing on a standalone & will the above rips work on one ?

I've found a site that explains every single option in XVID in plain english & not technobabble. Excellent informative read for anyone like me who doesnt understand what it all means.... http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/xvi ... page1.html

Fuck those guys.
Packed Bitrate, CQM, etc. Anything that requires processing.
Fuck em, i'd remove packed bitrate since the gain is small, and probably Global Motion Compression (GMC), but beyond that... seriously, fuck them. They made a stupid purchase, things like CQM help too much to go around making sure it plays on cheap players.
Just mention in a nfo that its using a custom quality matrix, and which one.
