it is but its hugely time consuming and greatly reducing visual quality.
The process of moving hardsubs is to compare frames and then average, what you get is a blur and out of place texturing because its guessing what the area behind the hardsubbing should look like.
I've never done it myself but the concept and the maths was covered in one of my AI modules at uni back in the day, there should be a few filters and applications that implement them... a quick google pulled out one:
http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/ ... 36789.html
You get a blurry background usually.
This is why you should, never, ever, ever hardsub. Ever. Unfortunately, a wealth of 'foreign' copies of english movies are hardsubbed in dutch/etc. and there's no way around the fact.

i've had a few scene releases where they've removed the time-code or watermark and, yep, it's just blurry.

@spud, no you should never hardsub a DVD rip but what Slasherman was talking about was a VHS rip, he wouldn't have had the choice.

actually, that's not what i said at all You can average out subtitles, its just hard and the results vary. @george, obivously Quote: | Unfortunately, a wealth of 'foreign' copies of english movies are hardsubbed in dutch/etc. and there's no way around the fact. |
VHS can be softsubbed; see closed captions.
iirc, you can actually extract subtitles from a vhsrip in closed caption form. Its a field operation. I've never seen anyone do it though. The subtitle information is just off the frame in the 'fussy' lines off the side by the audio.

That looks pretty damn good
Guess we'll have a release date around 2009
I guess the blurry ones i saw were on a black background.

I have seen some of those results. Not much better than just putting a black bar over the subs. Not worth the effort, I'd say. There is information missing and it is impossible to just 'guess' what it was. Fine for a small logo in a corner, but worthless for larger subs.

ooohhh i touched on this topic a while back in this thread
http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic.php?t=14294
it is possible like folk have said and you have a basis to compare the results by when photoshopping, the computer doesnt know what anything is supposed to look like where as we do...
EG:-
A subtitle covers someone`s bare chest at some points completely covering a nipple, now we as humans would know that underneath there was a nipple but the computer could only guess what colors things should be based on information it has either by comparing surrounding areas of checking adjacent frames, and if the information is not there the computer cant guess what color it should be and would "guess" that the color should be "chest color" from the surrounding area and the result would be wrong.
...which is a more wierd and estoteric way of saying whats already been said....
....you can tell i`m a theorectical scientist... ..i can go from simple to wildy and insanely confusing in one broad stroke....

thanks for your input...I think the nipple example is pretty good but I think for most part a program would work since the subtiles usually are in the bottom of the screen
