As some of you might know, I'm a teacher. My school organises a movienight every year which lasts from 20:00 to 08:00. In differnt classrooms movies are shown by projection with a beamer (we ahve several beamers, attached to the ceilings of classrooms). I spoke with the boys who are in charge of the organisation and suggested that I'd do a separate classroom with horror only. They liked the idea, so I'm in for it. What I want is to let the kids of today see what horror is really like. Most of them have seen films like Saw, Jeepers Creepers and Hostel. That's what they know about horror.
I can show six or seven movies.
I have these on my list, but I need more:
1) Dawn of the Dead
2) Texas Chainsaw Massacre
3) Evil Dead
4) Bad Taste
5) Troll 2 (for the fun of it)
Can anyone do some suggestions? Please take count of the fact that the movie can't be too obnoxious. I mean, when I show movies with rape it will not be appreciated by parents or colleagues. So, which movies can I add to this list so the kids will learn what horror actually is without showing movies which are way too much for 14-year olds?

The Shining is a great film but i'm not sure of the attention span of your average 14 yo, you really need to concentrate on it.
I'd go for the burning i think they'd appreciate that.
Whats the law for 18 rated films in Holland? Or do they not have any ratings over there, i know you can walk through the red light district with your 6yo and there loads of dongs hanging in the windows of sex shops

I'm not concerned about the law. I'm not expecting a visit from the police in the middle of the night. I have an agreement that I will only allow 14 year olds and older (2nd grade and higher). Those kids watch the most horrible stuff at home. Video renting stores just let 13 year olds take home 16 rated movies. So, I'm not expecting any problems there.
By the way: there aren't 18 rated films in Holland. The maximum is 16. Great country, isn't it?
About the suggestions: of all those mentioned I only have American Werewolf... on DVD. I need to have them on DVD, because I can easily watch English spoken films without subs, but the kids can't...

- Pet Sematary
- Prince of Darkness
- In The Mouth Of Madness
- Halloween 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 or even H20
- Demon Knight
Vampires:
- Fright Night
- Salem's Lot
Rather Sci-Fi (Horror):
- They Live
- The Hidden
- Something Is Out There
Good luck!

Alien (because its still one of the best horror films ever made)
Videodrome (give them an essay on censorship)
The Thing (give them an essay on Norwegians )
Evil Dead II (give them an essay on why its NOT A FUCKING SEQUEL, brownie points for anyone that has more than one brain cell and can pick up on the fact that Ash is narrating the beginning)
Near Dark (give them an essay on why Lance Henriksen is cool)
Older ones they might not have seen
Carrie
Poltergeist
Braindead is a better choice than Bad Taste imo, maybe both?
Word of warning on:
a) Dawn of the Dead, unless your students are bright they'll fall asleep its brilliant, we all know, but its very dry and long.
A definitely wouldn't show:
a) Phantasm 2 (because it will be way too boring an way too reliant on the first one)
b) Troll 2 (cos its shit)
c) halloween, or at least the sequels

Thanks for the input.
I can do:
Prince of Darkness
Halloween
Poltergeist
because I have those on DVD already.
I chose Bad Taste becasue Braindead has been shown three times already at school
As I'm gonna show Evil Dead, I won't show Evil Dead II (at least not this year). You're right about the sequel thingy, but still the movies are quite alike considering storyline. That's why I think it's wiser to save Evil Dead II for next year.
I'll introduce every film, so I can warn them before we start watching Dawn of the Dead. I'll tell them it's a long movie and why it is so brilliant.
I'm just showing Troll 2 because it is shit. When it's around 6 in the morning, I don't think the kids will be able to follow the storyline of a brilliant movie, that's why I'm gonna show them this one
I still have time enough to buy some movies on DVD whcih I don't own yet and are actually must haves (like The Thing). The horror night will be on January the 19th.

What about something like Mucha Sangre, undead, etc. ? Simple, straight forward movies, but enjoyable

You mean Undead the Australian zombie movie?
I like Troll 2 because it is so hilariously bad. I will introduce it by saying that until then they have been watching classics in the horror genre, and this one is for showing how it's not to be done and what can happen if you make sequels

I bought Carrie today and I'm about to buy The Thing and Pet Sematary. It will be one hell of a choice.
I planned Hellraiser for next year.
What do you guys think about The Fog? I bought it today, but is like 20 years ago I saw it on TV. Do you think it fits in my lineup?

The Fog is a great horror movie. It can be a bit too slow and boring for teenagers. But I personally like it.

I agree although it is a classic todays teens might find it a bit slow paced excluding myself Im 20 so I think its just fine but then again I appreciate oldschool classics like that but still *thumbs up* from me!

You might want to reconsider Evil Dead. The tree rape scene may be too much (since you wanted to avoid rape scenes).

Mmm, thanks for the advice. I just checked it. It's around 25 mins, right?
Well, it's not the same as rape scenes from movies such as Baise Moi and I Spit On Your Grave. It's pretty obvious that trees usually don't rape women, so I think I can show this. Another thing is that most people remember a movie for what happens near the end, and this scene is rather early.
I mentioned some movies, among them ED, to a colleague who always attends the movienight and he thought it was a good idea, so I'm not worried.
