What's the best media player hardware these days? if I were not to build a PC that is...

My expectation is anything I am able to acquire on the inter-webs from hdtv binary newsgroups, etc. would work out of the box, along with subs, etc.

ps. I have no interest what so ever in bluray, it is such a none issue format for me.

Have been looking at EGreat EG-M34A for a while.
Seems to have the options you're looking for.

I have one of these and it plays all the major formats, what in your opinion is missing?

doesn't support dts downsample for one. Yes it does play the major formats, but it's underpowered for the heavy hd work.
plus a media player should be able to play stuff from the network.

But the price is pretty okey for what you get! it's good, but just not the mediaplayer. (not saying that the one I've posted is the one)
It's really too bad it's lacking/missing just a couple of features to make it the media player it should be (could've been).

Plus it doesn't support nzb downloads, which is one of the things spud wanted.

The WD TV is not the media player but it's damn nice for its low price. And it's popular which is a good thing because there are tons of tweaked firmwares. You can have network access and even use it for downloading torrents and NZBs! I don't have one but I bought one for a friend and had plenty of time to play with it.

Mine has never, on either SD or 720p x264 files.

I've never tried a 1080p file though.

All the 720p I tried had no problems. I have only a handful of 1080p and those played fine too. There is a chance that older rips won't play smooth on any of all these players, because ~2 years ago everybody was encoding with unrestricted settings and the chipsets of these players support only HP L4.1 or lower.

okay so the general consensus is, if money is no object get a nitrogen cooled t-1000. If you don't want to build your own and are looking at bang/buck, WDTV?

Maybe we can come up with a recommendations page or something we can recommend some community approved players?

a) Dead-Donkey approved mechagodzilla pimp-daddy: ???
b) Bang/Buck: WDTV?
c) Diseased Rodent: ???
d) Legacy Media Player: Modified Xbox with XBMC

WDTV has a (n# reference frames * resolution) horsepower limit.
Pass and ye will stutter. If move at all.

DTS downsampling status offically "Planned".
Which means no guarantees.

and, to let the images do the talking :

Out this autumm.
Fair to assume you won't get that for under 100 bucks.

It's not a secret formula:

Level compliance

Select MaxDPB, --vbv-maxrate and --vbv-bufsize options from the table below depending on which level you wish to encode to:

Code:
    Level    MaxDPB  vbv-maxrate  vbv-bufsize
     3.0     3,037.5    10,000       10,000
     3.1     6,750      14,000       14,000
     3.2     7,680      20,000       20,000
     4.0    12,288      20,000       25,000
     4.1    12,288      50,000       62,500
     4.2    13,056      50,000       62,500
     5.0    41,400     135,000      135,000
     5.1    69,120     240,000      240,000

MaxDPB = Maximum Decoded Picture Buffer size. Although the table shows maximum values for --vbv-bufsize, this typically should be set to a maximum of 14000, it depends on the device you're encoding for.

Round up width and height (purely for this calculation, not the encode) to the nearest mod 16 value
Reference frames = MaxDPB * 1024 / 1.5 / ( mod16_width * mod16_height )
Round down the result

Example:

Lets say you are encoding @ 708x564. Rounding width and height up to mod 16 gives us 720x576.
Therefore, the number of reference frames for a

level 3.0 compliant encode is 3037.5 * 1024 / 1.5 / (720*576) = 5
level 3.1 compliant encode is 6750 * 1024 / 1.5 / (720*576) = 11

Settings for a 3.1 level encode of our example video: --level 3.1 --ref 11 --vbv-maxrate 14000 --vbv-bufsize 14000

This should go into the Encoding thread.

@WDTV: So they are releasing a new model, just because of the DTS downsampling feature?
