The Devils - when I watched The Nun & The Devil, it saaid on the backcover of the DVD that this was the Italian answer to "The Devils", so I had to see this one too.It stars Oliver Reed and while it may come off as a nunsploitation, it actually isn't really one of those films. It does feature some torture and some "medical treatment" though, but the sexscenes are very limited and the nuns aren't the main characters. Reed plays a priest in Loudon, in Louis XIII's France where Cardinal de Richelieu tries to seize power in plain sight of the king. He tries everything her can to defend the town from the cardinal's plans to demolish the townwalls, but then he gets to face to inquisition. The intrigue is nicely portrayed, there is a scene which must have caused protest by the church
Spoiler:
in this scene a nun dreams of having sex with the priest who is Jesus coming off the cross in the dream
but overall the violence is quite limited, especially if you are used to the Italo exploitation films like me. Acting is great, Reed is in top shape in this film. I also liked the weridness of the film: it looks like it was a stageplay, the costumes and the make up and all, and the fact that a lot of scenes seem twodimensional in a way. Good entertainment, with lots of strangeness for the curious viewer who wants to see something different. Recommended.

Hatchet III - wanting to complete the trilogy, I ordered this one on amazon and watched it yesterday. Unlike parts one and two, this one is not directed by Adam Green, but he wrote the story, so enough to keep your hopes up. Just like part two, this one starts where the previous part left off, so we see Marybeth sawing Crowley in pieces and then she enters a policestation covered in blood. She gets arrested, and the police and the paramedics are gonna search for the bodies. While they do this, Crowley comes back to life again and resumes his killing spree. A shallow storyline is made to accompany all this, but with the help of a reporter, Marybeth tries to end the legend once and for all in this final part of the trilogy. Lots of gore again, not so much (good) humour, but it was a nice passtime. If you liekd the first two films, you won't waste your time on this one. It is, however, a wise thing to not watch this one as your first of the trilogy (or the second one, for that matter). Better watch it in the intended order. Have fun!

Eyes Without A Face - aka Les yeux sans visage. French B/W 1960 horror about a plastic surgeon filled with feelings of guilt because he crashed his car while his daughter was in it, causing her to be maimed in the face. Now he plans to make her ace whole again, but he needs other faces for that. So together with his "secretary" he starts a hunt for young women whose faces he uses in experiments to transplant them onto his daughter. Of course, this leaves several young women dead: missing and looked for by the police. When an inspector has a hunch, he starts to make a plan to unravel this mystery, but the surgeon is very intelligent and not easily caught, so it will take time and effort of both sides in order to know who will win this game of cat and mouse. Acting is very nice, atmosphere is OK. Music and image are a bit low level, but that is age-related I guess. This film caused a shock back in the 60s by it's gruesome detail on the surgery table: today we wouldn't even cringe once at seeing this happen in front of us, but it is still nice to see this early shocker from France. No sure how to recommend this, it is a good film but not everyone's cake, I guess.

The church gets its knickers in a twist over everything but prosecuting the paedos and returning its plundered monies. The Devils makes the church look extremely corrupt, so its in their DNA to shield against criticism. Thankfully it now has no power over the censors, and the internet has made censorship almost completely impossible.

Yeah, and they could use the scene I mentioned for banning the entire movie. Fortunately, banned movies are usually the most popular ones :)

La Bambola di Satana - early giallo-esque film, about a niece returning to her uncle's castle to hear the reading of the will. As she inherits the castle, she is being plagued by several people who want to move her into selling it. Trying to keep herself together after hearing ghost stories about the castle and having some frightful experiences at night, she has to make the choice between staying in and selling the castle for a profit. A quite tame film, especially if you are used to the later Italo films which are almost all bloodier, sleazier and more shocking. Atmosphere is lacking a bit, which is quite something for an Italian film. Scenes are cut short often, taking the flow out of the atmosphere buildup. The music is a bit dumb, as is the plot. Acting is OK-ish, but this one is more a curiosity than a must see in the Italian cinema catalogue.

Wolfen - the title suggests a werewolf film of some kind and although there are wolves, they are usually not on screen. A cool thing is that there is something like a "wolfcam", making you see through the eyes of the creatures. Nowadays maybe not so special, but back in 1981 quite a novelty. New York sees some gruesome murders lately and when the police is trying to find the cause of it, they end up in a mysterious legend driven realm where wolves reign and hold up a tradition which stems from before white men came to America. The best thing about this film is the cinematopgraphy, the story is lacking a bit: I was waiting for the film to really get off, ut that moment never really came. The final scenes are somewhat satisfying, but I was hoping for more. Acting is OK, the performance by Albert Finney was especially nice. If you would leave out the blood, this would be more of a mystery movie, so don't expect too much horror.

The Spook Who Sat By The Door - blaxploitation film about a guy called Dan Freeman who wants to work for the CIA. Since the CIA is still not integrated, there is a bunch of black guys that gets the chance to join the force. Ultimately, Freeman succeeds and becomes an agent. After five years of working with the CIA he returns to his hometown Chicago to teach the black streetgang The Cobras everything he has learned, so they can fight "whitey" and achieve freedom. Not the most typical blaxploitationI know, but it has several love affairs for the main character and the black awareness is an important theme in the movie. What's not so typical is the music, which isn't as groovy as I'm used to, and the storyline is way more political than most others. It was an OK film, but by far not the best in it's genre, so if you want to watc some blaxploitation, I'd not pick this one.

Entrails and Amour - short about two lesbians breaking up and one of them kills herself in a pretty painful and bloody way. Riddled with feelings of guilt, the other one decides to commit suicide too. The end. It is a limited edition, with only 60 made (mine is nr 33), but that is the only interesting thing about this piece of film. For the content I would not buy it.

Baberellas - softporn disguised as a scifi: in a galactic TV show, the hostess Queen Sartanika, plays a game called "Plunder that planet". Guess which planet is about to be plundered... Of course they are gonna measure the sexual activity on earth, and they also search for the sexual nexus, in order to be able to conquer the entire planet. An all girl band and their manager get targeted by Sartanika and after one of the girls has blown away a mountain by using an anti-G-spot bra, they get influenced more and more by the crew of "Plunder that planet" and their libidometer. As you can read, this is all 250% nonsensical, and it gets really close to Flesh Gordon and it's sequel. Some familiar names appear, like Julie K. Smith and Julie Strain, the latter unfortunately only as a dancer in some obscure scenes in which she is hardly visible. I laughed out loud frequently bexcause it is all so dumb, but funny at th same time. I guessed the nexus right from the start, and ffwded some of the spacey dance scenes because it gets a bit too much after a while, even though the film only runs for some 70 minutes. Recommended for bad moviefans for sure.

Rec 4: the apocalypse - Jaume Balaguero and Manuela Velasco reunite for the final part of the Rec series. This one should have been part three imo, as the actual part three had too little to do with the other parts. It is nice that the wedding from part three is referenced in this one, though, nice gesture. The story here is that Angela Vidal is found right before the building from parts one and two is being blown away. They get her to a quarantine zone to examine her medically. In the meantime the doctors in the zone are working on an antidote against the virus, but for this they need test subjects. Of course, one of those escapes and then the shit hits the fan. Nice to see that this part was steering back onto the original route, but since it's got very little to do with recordings from a camera, the Rec in the title is a bit misleading and more a reference to the precious titles than a good title for the contents of this film. Still, it was an OK zombiefilm and it isn't a waste of time, especially not for fans of the subgenre.

Knock Knock - watched this one because it was mentioned in a review of The Green Inferno and it interested me. It's a home invasion film with Keanu Reeves as an architect who stays at home for the weekend while his wife and kids are off to the beach. While working on new designs, two girls ring his doorbell and ask for help because they are lost. He helps them, but then they seduce him and he falls for it. Then they start to threaten him with going to court if he doesn't do what they say, because they mention that they are under age and that he will face a long prison term on rape of minors. So now he is sort of a prisoner of their whims, and after he thinks he has successfully let them go, they return the next evening, to make his life even more miserable. I don't know what to think of this film. Acting was OK, even Keanu showed some emotions, but he was totally outclassed by the girls. The story was a bit meh, imo: there were squite some moments in which the situation could have gone in a more reasonable and believable way. The total wrecking of his life is a bit over the top, the senselessness of it all reminded me a bit of films like Just For The Hell Of It. There was a point oin the film where I thought it would make a brilliant twist
Spoiler:
in the scene where he finds out that the girls have been spying on him, I thought it would come out that he actually really was a paedophile and that his treatment by the girls was understandable, so you would have a radical twist of sympathy for the characters
but unfortunately that didn't happen. The biggest missed chance of the film, imo. It's not a complete waste of tie to watch this if you know what you're in for, but I would not watch it again, I think.

Dark Signal - UK horrormix between slasher and ghostmovie. Two stories, one about a radiostation shutting down and having a medium who can contact the other world as their last guest, and one about a woman in financial trouble breaking in a house with her boyfriend in order to solve their money problems, come together at the end of this movie. While this isn't a bad idea per se, it's execution is rather poor. The story about the break in is rather boring and it has a lot of unscary scares and predictable moments. The story about the radiostation doesn't seem to get any momentum, it looks like it is stuck in the beginning and can't get out of it. The plot at the end is OK-ish, but also has some very wtf moments which throw away the little credibility it had. Acting is poor and effects (especially the ones with fire) look mediocre. Sadly this is another addition to the long line of recent UK horror flops.

Me And My Mates vs The Zombie Apocalypse - horrorcomedy from down under. It is more leaning towards the comedy part, and in that it succceeds often and fails sometimes, with jokes being too much to bear, but also a lot of funny ones. A bunch of guys and the daughter of one of them entrench themselves in a telephone exchange building while outside the world is going to smithereens in the zombie apocalypse. Most of the film is filled with dialogue about the survival of the characters and their respective pasts rather than about zombie action, but that is not really a problem since the flow is there and everything is interesting enough to keep watching this. When there is gore it looks good and athough some characters are acting a bit stereotypical (in not such a funny way, rather cheesy), the situational comedy is pretty nice. The ending has three stages, so check out the end credits if you want to see it all. Funny enough, OK watch I'd say.

The Purge: election year - in an election year, the NFFA (New Founding Fathers of America) have their candidate advocating more purging, the whole thing has become some sort of a religion for the supporters. On the other hand, there is senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell, Juliet from "Lost") who wants to put an end to the annual purgenight. In Washington DC, Joe Dixon has to defend his supermarket against some spoiled girls who wanted to steal from him that afternoon, and Laney Rucker (Pequena Muerte) is back with her triage car roaming the streets to help victims of the violence. When the senator is in danger because of a planned assassination, she, her bodyguard, Joe and Laney have to survive in order to make the abolishing of the purge a reality. Another nice film in the Purge series, now a trilogy and I guess this will be the final one (and indeed I hope so). Acting is OK, some stuff is a bit too incredible, like persons going down fast and main characters dodging all bullets or surviving with severe wounds for a long time, but overall I liked this. If you have seen Purge 1 and 2, then give this one a go and you won't feel sorry for it. You can even watch this one if you haven't seen the other two, but I recommend watching the others first.

Scare Campaign - a prank TV show called Scare Campaign made to scare people and then film them, is losing popularity because of a more extreme group coming up: the masked freaks. They now have to make an episode which will blow away the audience in order to keep their jobs. But when they are set up in an old hospital, the stooge, as they call their prank victim, turns out to be an ex-employee of the same hospital, and things get a nasty soon after. Now the prank is being turned on the pranksters, and the masked freaks are hot on their heels. Pretty cool horror with loads of nice effects and a cool twist in a twist. Meegan Warner looks nice in her nurse costume and does a great acting job, being thrown from one side of the emotional spectrum to the other. I had good fun watching this, the ending is a bit confusing at first (it came a bit sudden imo) but then turns out to be quite good. Recommended.

Summer Camp - with people who have been working on such films as Mientras Duermes, Rec and The Conjuring you might expect a little masterpiece. Although this isn't all that bad, it is by far not a masterpiece. Two boys and two girls are preparing a summercamp when one of them gets infected by drinking contaminated water. The infected person becomes a bloodthristy creature with no mind, a bit like the modern running zombies. Now the others have to try and survive and get help, or they will become infected too. Acting is not that bad, but atmosphere was a bit lacking and the fact that some of the infected returned to normalcy didn't help either: that was only confusing and very illogical (or maybe I missed the explanation). The ending was pretty cool, btw. Average film so not a waste of time, but it's not a must see.

Welcome to the Jungle - four youngsters (two American boys and two Australian girls) head out to Papua New Guinea because they want to find Michael Rockefeller. Although he has been missing since 1961, they think he might still live after they hear of a sighting of a white guy with a huge beard living among the Papuas. After they arrive, they first have to adapt to the new circustances: violence in the streets of Port Moresby, intimidation at the border with Indonesia and the usual dangers of the jungle. Soon they get into a conflict, with one set of boy and girl vs the other one. When the party animal set is taking a raft to go downstream faster, they end up meeting the cannibals, so the question is: will the other set be on time to save them? Nice cannibal flick, although the role of the cannibals was pretty limited. I liked the ending ad the gore was good. Recommended if you like cannibal movies, just don't expect a reprisal of Cannibal Holocaust (although there is a ncie nod to that movie in this one).

Thirst - an alien crashlands on earth and is very thirsty, so when he meets a man, he sucks him dry. In the surroundings, a Second Chance camp is getting set up, in this camp three people try to shape young delinquents in order to prepare their return to society. It doesn't take long before this group also meets the alien. The alien spreads a large amount of electric static, so it can be tracked using an old transistor radio. In the dark the alien looks pretty good, and even some daylight shots are acceptable, but in some scenes in the daylight sequences you can see the cgi rearing it's ugly head a few times very obviously. How this movie develops is very straightforward and therefore not very original, but if you see this as a light snack, then you won't feel like you wasted any time.

Ghosthunters - a man loses his wife and daughter because they are killed by a serial killer. He then does everything he can to catch their spirits, so they don't have to wander around the house and suffer. Before he designed a machine with which to catch ghosts, and friends of his have built it and made the software for it. Together they go on the hunt now, supported by a medium and a journalist. It doesn't take long before they measure some spiritual activity and they succeed in catching their first ghost. But the medium realises this is a dangerous thing to do: distrubance in teh balance between the human world and the dimension of the spirits can have deadly consequences, she thinks. Of course the rest of the film is the answer to this problem, and you will know what happened pretty far before the ending, because the "twist" is one without a lot of surprises. Although ghostfilms ususally scare me the most, this one only gave me a bit of shivers once or twice. Acting is OK-ish, but the guy playing Henry does a bad job and some of the actresses looked like they had trouble not to laugh in certain scenes which weren't meant to be funny. Effects are quite OK, but I don't think I will watch this fil ever again.

Antibirth - the mentioning of the word "body-horror" in one of the reviews on this film made me watch it. The story is about Lou, a partying, drinking and drug using woman who only goes to work as a cleaning woman in a motel when she is out of money. After one night, she wakes up in her bed, noticing that she is pregnant. But: she hasn't slept with anyone in over six months, so how did this happen? At first she doesn't take it seriously and thinks that it might be a phantom pregnancy, so she keeps smoking, drinking and using drugs. She even does so after the pregnancy test says that it is all real. At the motel she meets Lorna, a woman who tells her that it is all part of a secret government program, and that her "baby" is in fact something experimental. From this moment on, the body horror part starts and it is by far the most interesting part of the film. It can't compete with anything Croneberg made, but it is better than the drug induced mumbo jumbo you have been listening to up to that point. So if you want to have some quick fun, skip the first 68 minutes. I can recommend that final part to anyone.

31 - Rob Zombie delivers another movie and again it has his wife in the lead role. This is becoming a bit annoying imo, just like Eli Roth, Zombie should stop casting his wife before it becomes a stupid gimmick. Well, onto the film itself: it's about a travelling party, who get kidnapped after having stopped at a gas station and because one of them talked to a girl. That this girl was bad news was overly obvious, so the attack didn't come as a surprise at all. When they are captured, they have to be the mice in a game of cat and mouse, much like The Running Man: they are being let loose inside a labyrinth (an old factory building), and the directors of the game release killers inside. The purpose of the game is that all mice die, and the directors, who are dressed up as 18th century French gentry have fun watching it all. The killers are somewhat ridiculous: a nazi dwarf, a duo consisting of the girl mentioned earlier and a gay looking giant with a German accent, etc. It wasn't bad what I was seeing, but it didn't have any edge either. It has been done before and usually it had more surprises or twists. This was quite predictable, and a step down from Lords of Salem imo. The good thing this film did for me was that I felt like watching The Running Man again. Oh, and the gore was OK.

Daylight's End - apocalyptic film with infected ex-humans running around. They act a lot like the monsters in 28 Days Later and Cell, etc. A woman is saved by a lone gunman, and she takes him into her shelter where she lives with a group of survivors. Problem is that scenes like these all look like Walking Dead rip-offs while they actualy sometimes try and be something good and a bit original. This is one of the better attempts imo. The leader of the sheltered group is Lance Henriksen, and they are planning on fleeing the city, but they wouldn't now how. So they send out search parties, and one of them, with the woman in it, got ambushed. So now they have to fight because the infected are laying siege to their building every night. The lone gunman doesn't get a very warm welcome because of distrust and he is being locked up for security reasons. But of course the sun sets again, and the infected attack once more. And then they will need the help of the lone gunman. Not much story to tell, but it was all quite entertaining. The cgi was kept to a minimum which was good, as the cgi smoke from bodies or buildings looked shit. Acting was pretty good, I thought it was a nice touch that all the fighters actually had a familylife, and they tried to show some of it. Nice film, not very special, but not a waste of time either.

The Neon Demon - thriller with horror elements. Story is about a girl going to LA to start her modeling career. Because of her natural beauty, she gets signed to a bureau, gets a session with a famous photographer and closes a show of a famous couturier, all in her first weeks. The envy of established models is very noticeable, and since she is rising to fame, she can't keep her normal friendship with the boy who took her first pictures. After a while she starts cahnging herself, and she becomes part of the dog eat dog world of supermodels. This is a very thin storyline for a two hour film and that is also my main complaint when it comes to this movie. It is very beautifully shot, the music is great and the atmosphere is very well done, but there is so little to tell that it becomes all very slow and sometimes even a bit tedious. Another thing which didn't please me much is the lack of horror. Only in the very end there are some hints to horror, the rest of the film is more a drama about a country girl going to the big city. I really must emphasize that the cinematography is among the best I have seen, so if you want to see beatiful images and don't care much about storyline or plot development, then this film is perfect for you. But for me the symbolism was a tad too arty, and the lack of storyline and horror makes me not watch this film again.

The Curse of Robert the Doll - sequel to Robert the Doll. Image of the film looks somewhat bleached, sound is somewaht mugfled from time to time. The storyline is beyond simple: Robert the Doll has found his way into a museum, where he is the main attraction now among historical artefacts. Of course, people start disappearing and turning up dead again. The kills are not very spectacular, in some of them you can clearly see how they were "made". The fight with Robert is on again, a new cleaning woman and a security guard take the lead and they also take a love interest in each other (that's not cliche at all, now is it?). The dollmaker in the end looks incredibly fake, and the whole thing had a huge MEH all over it. Don't waste your 79 minutes on this one is what I would say.

Happy Birthday - Brady wakes up on is birthday only to find out that his grilfriend cheated on him. This makes him mad and together with his best friend Tommy he goes to blow off steam in Mexicali. There they find girls, drugs and booze and pretty soon Brady and Tommy are kneedeep in trouble with the local cartel and they get kidnapped for ransom. So in order to survive they have to find a way to escape, because Brady's family isn't rich or anything. With death looming over his birthday party, Brady thinks about how he can solve his situiation. This all sounds OK-ish, but it's not horror or anything. The big blowout comes when the plot is being revealed:
Spoiler:
the entire thing is set up, the whole trip to Mexico was made possible by actors and actresses who played dead at times and made Brady have some of the scariest moments in his life. There is even a plot in the plot, which overdoes it by miles, and if you liked The Game you can skip this one easily, as this is a third rte copy of that one.
Acting isn't all that bad and the trippy scenes are OK, the music is good but that's it. I'm not gonna watch this one again. Steven Tyler has a role in this one, but what he does in this film, doesn't look very natural to me.

Zombieworld - kind of funny anthology about a worldwide zombie outbreak. A news anchorman switches between locations all across the world (although they are suspiciously often in English language countries) to report on the zombie outbreak. His reports are interrupted by public safety messages from the government in videoclipstyle. It's all rather low budget but quite funny, acting is not top notch but better than in most low budget productions. The anchorman bits are pretty cool (also read the text messages in the bottom of the screen), although how it will go is very predictable. Some of the episodes were a bit boring, like the Ireland one, but the one with Jesus in the beginning is great. Weird, but great. I had fun, recommended to zombiefans and people who want to have a laugh.

Range 15 - a zombie apocalypse movie filled to the rim with testosteron and testosteron related humour. A bunch of soldiers getting out of service have a party and it goes out of hand so they end up in jail, But, good for them: the zombie apocalypse has started outside so they can liberate themselves and then wreak some havoc among the undead. On their journey they encounter old friends, some busty babes and of course loads of zombies. There is lots of shooting going on, unfortunately all firing and most blood is cgi. The story is nothig special, some jokes are funny but with the overload of testosteron, the whole thing gets old fast. I recommend this only for groups of male friends who are half drunk or something, otherwise you might harm yourself before this movie ends.

What Waits Below - 80s horror with the military searching for a good place to plant a transmitter in Belize. When they found a cave they want to use it, but the scientists working there want to explore it before the military ruins and pollutes the site. So they go in together, the military plants their transmitter, and the next day it is gone. So what happened? A small group intends to find out and they meet something unexpected underground. Might have inspired The Descent later, but this one doesn't have actual monsters and it contains a heavy environmental and anthropological message. Acting is OK, the characters are somewhat standard and the underground creatures look very made up, with very fake hair for example. Still, I had fun, mostly because of atmosphere, because there is a bit of a lack of things happening. Would watch it again, though.

The Funhouse Massacre - slasher about a funhouse based in an old asylum which opens on Halloween. The actors are supposed to play some of the worst serial killers from recent history: a cannibal cook, a fanatic dentist, a radical taxidermist, etc. However, the real killers have escaped from their maximum security prison with help of Stitchface killer. So the actors in the funhouse get "replaced" and shortly after the funhouse opens it's doors. The visitors flood the place without knowing they are in great danger. Acting is ok, the gore is great, the use of cgi is very limited (and usually it's for other effects than gore). I had fun with the killers, the plot about the two main character's love interest was far below interesting. Ok film, don't know if I'll rewatch one day.

Night of the Living Deb - in this one, the love interest was the main theme and the living dead were only part of the background story. I'd call this a zomromcom, and I really hate romcom. The presence of the zombies didn't save this one gor me. Ray Wise does his thing and he does it well, but I cringed often af the corny jokes. There are one or two instances in which the zombies were used quite well, but it us too little overall. Not gonna watch this again. Be warned that this is not horror.
