Quote: | Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is the brainchild of celebrated horror writer and self-styled "fabulist" Garth Marenghi, author of such genre classics as Afterbirth (a mutated placenta attacks Bristol) and Crab! ("One of the three best horror books about crabs I've ever read" - Hard Gore Magazine). Back in the 1980s, he branched out into television production, writing and starring in a series so radical, so scary and so downright crazy that when the bosses of Channel 4 saw what they had on their hands, they ran away screaming, like little girls. Only now, twenty years on and amid the worst programming drought in television history, have the station finally allowed the show on the air. Intercut with new interviews with Marenghi himself and his co-stars Dean Learner and Todd Rivers, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is perhaps the most disturbing vision of hospital life ever broadcast.
And if you believe that, you'll believe anything.
In reality, the series is the creation of comedians Matthew Holness and Richard Ayoade, and grew out of their stage shows featuring Holness as Merenghi, a self-important, self-mythologising, misogynistic writer of overblown tales. Crammed with verbal and visual gags, the TV show pokes fun at the conventions of the horror genre (and on-a-shoestring TV production) in a way similar to that in which Police Squad sent up cop shows. And it's got a great theme tune too.
Produced by Avalon for Channel Four Television Corporation. Made and broadcast in 4:3 (Fullscreen ratio). |

This series really can't be summed up in any review. An absolutely hilarious sci-fi/horror piss take that spoofs the likes of The Outer Limits, Kingdom, Hammer House, etc. Terrible acting, scripting and stories (all purposely done) combined with the funniest continuity errors ever commited to film makes this unmissable for any horror fan, or anyone who loves spoofs.

hmm episode four has some messed up bleeding colours. Looks like encode errors:
It happens say every minute or so, not that bad normally. The colour is fine, then it starts to bleed, and then gets blue/red hue, then returns to normally. It looks like the above a few times for about a second.

Xvid, surprise surprise. But other Xvid episodes (2, 5 and 6) don't do this, right?

The Xvid encodes look much better than the divx ones.
Just one episode it happens on, I suspect it was a capture (ie initial) fuck up not compressing it to xvid

Ok, ok, I know you love the codec... I'm not against it either, on the contrary, recen Divx encodes look really impressive. It's just that from time to time there are some problems with the older ones (there are, believe me), that's why I'm still a bit sceptical about it.
No need to hate me.

watched the first ep. kinda cool, but not hilarious IMO. But they speek really fast sometimes and with the thick accent I suspect I missed alot of the smaller verbal jokes. Should've had subs. will still get the rest..

don't listen to him, funniest stuff on tv for quite a while!
The accents are one of the reasons why its so great, especially Sanchez
Not even a smile at Thorton Reed with his shotgun? Keep going, the latter episodes are better. The ape men in episode four are great, so's the high speed chase!
Oh and if you know anyone from scotland, make them watch Scotch Mist

sorry, I didn't mean to totally discredit the series.... mearly said that at least I didn't get what was funny alot of the times, and part of the reason for this was because I couldn't understand what was being said!
but I'll keep on going.. hell it's only 6 eps.. =)
Allready got my friend hooked on Monkey Dust. He viewed 5 eps in succession.

Unfortunately so are 90% of comedies over here On the plus side, the budget is unlikely to go up on series 2 Not unless they run out of fishing line or need more Broccoli (keep watching ).
lol @

It's ok, but not as hilarious as LoG. Still worth a download. I'm sharing all episodes, let me know if I should increase the prio.
Monkey Dust will be next!

I thought this was DAMN funny, watched the 1st episode (the only one to finish so far) last night.
I love the deliberately bad writing : "it was a double-edged point" etc
the accents are fantastic as is the VERY well observed pisstake of 80's attitudes and crap TV dramas. It's very British though, more so that LoG, and I suspect that unless you've lived through 80's britain alot of the more subtle jokes will go unnoticed.

Seems to have gone down a storm over here
I'm laughing my ass off Thorton Reed's on screen... "well I'd never acted before.."
I loved the bit in episode five with the fake exorcist music with Sanchez dancing and Thorton filing his papers and finishes his filing then just looks up at the camera

Yep, now it happend (and I fear, not for
the last time). Watched the first episode,
and was not able to get more then a few
bits together. They speak kind of very unusual
English (for my foreign ears). Also, they don't
pronounce correct the words but mumble around
and that all very quicky..waterfall speed.
Sorry, but I had to cancel my downloads.
Sad, because I think it would have hit my
taste for sick humor very well.
