Pretty much the same as original. They even used same locations. I was quite surprised to find out it takes place in Japan. Sam Raimi didn't really do much here. Hopefully he will do much more for Evil Dead remake and Evil Dead 4

Raimi didn't direct, he was the producer only. The original director of the japanese version made this remake, that's why its isn't all that bad, but pretty much the same.

Producers have no creative role at all. Merely money men. The successes and failing of this movie have nothing to do with him.

I don't think it's always that cut and dry. Here are a couple quotes from Raimi:

Quote:
Rue Morgue: How hands-on are you as a producer with the Ghost House projects?
Sam Raimi: It's going to vary from project to project. It's a new company so it's hard to say, but right now my partner and I select the script and the director, we do the casting, and we let the director direct their film. But we're very active producers, I would say.

Quote:

IGN FILMFORCE: What exactly was your role on The Grudge as producer?

SAM RAIMI: Roy Lee, a producer, showed this movie to my partner, actually partners, Joe Drake and Robert Tapert. We have a company, Ghost House Pictures. We're trying to bring the newest, coolest, most different types of horror films to the screen and this movie blew me away. I really wanted to remake this film, but not in the way that most American companies remake films. I wanted to keep the director and have him shoot it in Japan and just change as few things as possible, but to include an American cast, and obviously that would mean story changes. But I really wanted to preserve as much of the beauty of the construction and the direction as possible, but just make it accessible to the American crowd, who doesn't really see movies that are set in Japan with Japanese actors and Japanese dialogue. So, my goal was in trying to preserve what he had done. I had a hand in the casting, I had a hand in the script, along with my partners and a hand in the editing, choosing the sound designer, the composer? And, you know, lining up the proper mix and trying to, if necessary, protect the vision of the director from outside influences that American commerce in the film business seems to impose upon filmmakers. Fortunately, the film is with Columbia and I've got a lot of good friends there and fortunately, they liked the movie very much, so that didn't turn out to be necessary?

There's a few directors who also produce that do a bit more, Stephen Speilberg is one of them. I mean there are claims that Speilberg actually pretty much directed all of Poltergeist even though Tobe Hooper got the directors credit.

But these are extremely rare, and all raimi did was cast it seems (which is fine here I guess, since Raimi is experienced, but I really don't like to think of projects where the director don't do their own casting).

Producers generally, and here too, hire, raise funds and budget, they don't direct or write. aka the creative bits :)

Quite clearly he didn't direct, he was probably just around giving advice, if I were to take a confident observation ;)

Yeah, Raimi didn't direct or write, but he did have control over a lot of things. Too many to not be considered a creative influence.

It was Raimi's decision to remake this? And now he wants somebody else to remake his own film? What is he, becoming senile?

Oh, wait... I was thinking of Carpenter for those last two. Never mind.

Well Takashi Shimizu was remaking himself for the 4th time if I recall it right, so obviously it can be done :D

Evil Dead is my the most favorite movie, but I hope that ED remake won't be that tightly bound to original, because ED is great as it is. Who wants to see bullet-time slow motion axe slashing? It just steals original beauty like those facehuggers in AvP.

This movie was completely implausible! I don't mean all of the stuff about ghosts and curses... I mean the part where the guy doesn't want to have sex with SMG.

I can't dismiss these American remakes so easily as a lot of people seem to. I thought it was fun to re-re-visit the Ju-on story with actors I like (Raimi, Pullman, that really ugly guy from In The Bedroom). It was cool watching for references to other J-Horror movies (the cop from Suicide Circle, the food from Uzumaki). The performances and photography and sound were all at least equal to the original. As long as they didn't wreck the scene where the eyes stare into the surveillance camera I was going to be ok.

Now an American remake of Evil Dead is a different story: completely unnecessary. I watched that one on DVD a couple of months ago and it's still scary.

Just watched the original. I was not too impressed. Liked the ring, the eye and dark water better. Especially the last one. The story was a bit thin, I think.

Sam Raimi's fault too wargand

I thought the original was okay, its not as good as the aforementioned, but then the aforementioned aren't as good as Seven Samauri so we can't win them all

The aforementioned aren't as good as Seven Samauri?

Samauri? Do you mean Seven Samaritan? Don't know this one. You cannot mean the Seven Samurai. This is not a horror film and cannot be compared. Or is there a 'Seven Zombie Samurai' remake? :-D

aforementioned: bold because you find this word cool. :-P
