Nandub is also a very useful program. It's a VirtualDub add-on.
You need VD to run ND, and you need ND to run a program called AviSplit, which will split your .avi's without making you redub them.
It just cuts em up. It's good.
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nandub.html
I don't have a link for AviSplit, but if you can't find it on Google I'm pretty sure you'll be able too on Emule.

Why do ppl keep using those obscure codecs? This one, 3ivx, is especially annoying.

Exceptionally annoying.
I convert them all to DIVX/MP3 using Virtualdub.

that's a bit excessive given the quality loss involved, I'd be pissed off with the wacky codec, but re-encoding would reduce quality too much for me.
There's the RV9 codec that's becoming popular. I'm not too big a fan of this one. It gives people a fake effect as if they are wearing too much makeup since it blurs out detail as if it were trying to reduce everything to single colour areas. Excellent for cartoons mind.

BAH!!!! So I install the flac LOSSLESS codec to play the file, and what do I find???? There's a damn error in the file, so I have to decode it to wav and enable 'dissmiss errors' which leaves a tiny gap in the music!! How silly can you get?

today i installed the latest gknot update (0.34.8 beta) and saw that now gk comes bundled with a new codec. has anyone ever used x264? it's still in alpha stadium but it could be quite good...
i tried to use it to rip my latest project, but when i wanted to make the compressibility check there was an error message. i'm not sure what triggered the problem though, cause i made a clean reinstall for the gk update...

I'm not enthusiastic about experimenting with new codecs when the old ones are working perfectly. This will surely be a problem for standalone owners, and as usual, requires the new codec to be installed on your machine, which means more crap in your system. So, unless everyone starts using it, I'd keep away from it, especially that it's in its aplha stage.

Yep, I just tried it, The compressablility check DOES work although it errorred for me the first time too, you just have to go into codec settings and then click out again.
It's VERY good for an alpha codec, although it needs MUCH more processing power than XVID, the xbox struggles (although that could be because I'm running an older version of XBMC)

x264 is Nero digital and is now considered the best mpeg4 codec.
It unanimously slaughtered divx and xvid (xvid being the previous king), universally. Its doom9s king codec now for example.
The problem is is that the official codec is properity, owned by nero, and the open source one is a bit beta.
However, in the space of about 9months its made more progress than divx has in 3 or 4 years.

Yeah, I just changed my write-up, it's VERY good quality on the PC using FFDshow (the rip was slightly oversized though @ 703Mb)

i tried that first, but i couldn't even access the codec options. i got it running though by installing the latest ffdshow and x264 codec. now it's running smoothly and i think i'll try to do the same rip i just finished with xvid. i'm wondering which one'll look better...

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ is a good player too, plays partials, bin/cue files and rar files, very versatile.

well i gave up on that after my pc became unstable. there was some driver problem after installing the codec. every time the explorer tried to show the details of an avi at the bottom of the left side it shut down (the explorer not the pc). opening gspot triggered the same effect. now that i set the system back to a previous date everything's fine again. when there'll be a newer version (maybe a beta) i'll try again... true but it still lacks some features that media player classic has. like screenshots and even more important the possibility to move the screen. eg yesterday i watched demons 2 on dvd and the picture wasn't filling the whole screen and there was a corruption at the top. so i just moved the screen and enlarged it a bit manually. i don't know of any other player that can do this.
