This movie is such a squandered opportunity.

Random question - do you use two pass still with x264 rips? I was checking the 'rules' on the scene and it seems to be don't bother with two pass since its lower quality on bluray sources. I have to encode some dvds so was curious what the easiest/best settings are these days?

I use a single lossless pass with x264 since filesize doesn't matter there.

I usually encode the following way:

1. Lossless HUFYUV pass to AVI where all the filtering is done
2. Determine compressibility for a fixed file size => x264 options (for this I use the guide created by elguaxo: http://sbig.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=16224)
3. Two-pass x264 encode of the AVI

and next question, how come you still use XviD for these rips? Is x264 not faster/stronger/better access to internet?

Me? Told you already:

Hey Spud,

as a matter of fact I have a couple of years ago. Didn't like it (don't even remember why) and stuck with XviD, which I'm really good with. :)
I do use x264 for my lossless pass with filters though.
I don't really see myself switching at this point. I'll most likely retire from releasing first. Being the only remaining ripper on the de facto undead ed2k network, it's probably appropriate that I use an outdated codec, come to think of it. :D

As for the movie: be warned, this sucks! Would have been a ShitBuster back in the day. :suicide:

I just ripped a bluray with CRF and wasn't happy with the results, so i put it down to the placebo level and it improved drastically.... so, are the people that say CRF 18 over exaggerating?

I couldn't tell. Like I said, I only use it in my lossless pass for filtering. I usually end up with 15-25GB for a movie.

IIRC most groups rip at crf 17 or 18 these days.

I retired from ripping, but I'm into video editing now (game videos). A 30 minute round of an fps game turns out as 20 GB of film too lol. Flv now, but I'm gonna switch to mp4 with x264 encoding.
