| Code: | One of the things you learn in medical school, it is said, is how to think like God. No one can teach you that, but unless you somehow learn it, you'll never be comfortable looking people in the eye and telling them what their chances are. The characters in "Flatliners" are all medical students, and their egos are so healthy that during the course of the movie they engage in a competition to see who can look God himself in the eye.
Here's their plan. It starts with those stories about people who are pronounced dead but then are brought back to life - and how a lot of them report the same blissful afterlife experience. They talk about a tunnel of light, peaceful music, and the presence of loved ones welcoming them to the other side. And they talk about being outside their own bodies, looking down, conscious of the efforts to revive them but feeling detached, because death is so sweet.
The young heroes of "Flatliners" want to visit that land of light and music, and return to tell the story. So they devise a dangerous experiment in which, one after another, they'll deliberately create a condition of clinical death, sample the afterlife experience, and then be brought back to life by emergency measures. The audacity of this experiment is terrifying and intriguing, and let's face it: It's a great idea for a movie.
"Flatliners" was shot mostly in the neo-gothic gloom of turn of the century locations in and around the University of Chicago. Gargoyles and shadows and gloomy, stained-glass windows surround the deadly experiments, as the students, urged on by ringleader Kiefer Sutherland, tamper with God's plans for them. One after another, they take what they hope is a round trip into eternity. The risks are many: Not only death, of course, but even expulsion from medical school.
What they find on the other side is not the proper business of a reviewer to reveal. How they come back, however, deserves some comment, because the movie engages in plot manipulation that is unworthy of the brilliance of its theme. Each student tries to one-up the others, to stay away a little longer, to go a little deeper into whatever is there. And so each resuscitation attempt is a little trickier. Eventually the movie falls into a disappointing pattern, in which we're supposed to hold our breath while yet another voyager balances between life and death. One resuscitation is suspenseful. Two are fine. More than two wears out their welcomes.
The cast, talented young actors, inhabit the shadows with the right mixture of intensity, fear and cockiness. In addition to Sutherland, there are Julia Roberts (her first role since "Pretty Woman"), Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin (Alec's brother), Oliver Platt and Kimberly Scott. There were some hazards in this project - with the wrong note, they easily could look silly - and yet they take their chances and pull it off. "Flatliners" is an original, intelligent thriller, well-directed by Joel Schumacher. I only wish it had been restructured so we didn't need to go through the same crisis so many times. |
| Code: | 1990 was a year that brought a sudden interest in afterlife themes with the high-profile, Award-winning Ghost (1990), as well as Adrian Lyne’s overlooked Jacob’s Ladder (1990), and this. This came from director Joel Schumacher. Schumacher, a former window dresser who broke into film as a costume designer, is probably the worst director ever allowed loose on an A-budget. Schumacher had debuted with the likable The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981), then gone onto the success of the bland Brat Pack film St Elmo’s Fire (1985) and the inanely silly teen vampire effort The Lost Boys (1987). Still ahead for Schumacher would be his various John Grisham adaptations The Client (1994) and A Time to Kill (1996), his two excruciating ventures into the Batman movie franchise, Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997), the offensively redneck Falling Down (1993), the snuff movie thriller 8MM (1999) and the semi-okay psycho-thriller Phone Booth (2002).
The problem with Schumacher is that he is a competent MTV director - where he has often worked with groups like INXS - who has exceeded his level of competence by trying to tackle plot and drama. His entire effect comes in the look of a film, the lighting and set design, yet he has absolutely no concept of dramatic sincerity. Even when Schumacher tries to make a stripped-back, handheld camera film like Tigerland (2001), all he produces is a handful of Vietnam War/bootcamp cliches. You cannot deny that Schumacher and photographer Jan de Bont [who also turned out to be a director as bad as Schumacher - see The Haunting (1999)] don’t make an exquisitely lovely film. They invest it with a dark Mediaeval atmosphere, all cavernous Gothic hospitals and beautifully lit cathedralar architecture - this is a hospital where giant classical statues just lie about in basements. The soft and evocative, almost candle-lit photography is exceptional, and the classical score excellent. And when it comes to the horror scenes Schumacher pumps up a dynamic medley of flashing light and steam effects a la the Scott Brothers, Ridley and Tony. Schumacher is even capable of producing some quite eerie images when he wants to - the way a set of blinking construction lights can take on sinister overtones, or how a school of passing night cyclists momentary seem like phantoms. But you are never more than aware that Schumacher has designed the whole film for effect rather than rationale - like when we get to Kiefer Sutherland’s apartment which is decorated in ankle-height neon strips for no reason other than the lighting effect it provides. It is exactly the result you might get when you get a window dresser to direct a horror film.
But while Flatliners is worth watching for the atmosphere that Schumacher and de Bont evoke alone, it seems ultimately irrelevant. The film has a premise that has immensely exciting promise to it. And up until the story gets back from the beyond and turns into horror psycho-drama - about a third of the way in - it continues to convey promise. But all of it - the scientific quest into the afterlife, even the spooky horror elements - eventually transpire as being no more than a twentysomething sensitivity and angst film. It’s like Schumacher has crossbred St Elmo’s Fire with Altered States (1980) or the climactic afterlife trip from Brainstorm (1983). The sum profundity of tackling such an epic issue as life after death is for William Baldwin to say sorry for secretly making videotapes of the women he beds, for Kevin Bacon to apologize to a Black girl he was mean to growing up, and for Julia Roberts to come to terms with her father who committed suicide. The film operates on the infuriatingly banal presentiment that all the problems of the past can be solved by warm fuzzy feelgood cliches. It’s sad to think when it comes to taking on the great challenge of asking what lies after death all that Flatliners can end up doing is to resolve everything on a figurative group hug.
