Plot Outline: Joan and Peter Allison, a couple travelling to Hamburg for their honeymoon are joined by Dr. Vitus Verdegast (Bela Lugosi) towards the end of their journey. On the way to the hotel, their bus crashes during a storm and the driver is killed and Joan injured, Dr. Verdegast suggests seeking refuge in Hjalmar Poelzig's (Boris Karloff) house, an old acquaintance of his. Unbeknownst to Peter and Joan, Dr. Verdegast is seeking revenge for the death of his wife and for the slaughter of Poelzig's entire army when it was sacrificed to satan by Poelzig's own dark priest. Verdegast discovers Poelzig's plans for Joan, the same plans that killed his own wife. To save her, Verdegast must beat him in a game of chess.

yes, it is. but don't ask me why or how.

i just read the story to see what it's about and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the movie. obviously the movie is only called 'the black cat' so they could put poe's name on the cover.
