"...Mesmerizing....A gothic backwoods RASHOMON, PARADISE LOST inspires a gripping sense of moral vertigo..." -- Rating: A (Entertainment Weekly 10/11/1996)

"...It captures thought-provoking moments with serious implications..." (Film Comment 03/01/1996)

"...What Berlinger and Sinofsky prove again is their unmatched talent for gaining access to people caught up in tragedy....PARADISE LOST is as important a film as will be seen this year..." (Los Angeles Times 10/31/1996)

"...Unique among courtroom documentaries..." (Chicago Sun-Times 09/27/1996)

Quote:
On May 5, 1993, the mutilated bodies of three second-graders were found in a wooded area near West Memphis, Ark. A month later, murder charges were filed against three local teenagers, who were accused of killing the children in a satanic ritual. A police officer, asked how good the state's case was, said, ``On a scale of 1 to 10, it's an 11.'' But a hypnotic new documentary suggests that the community and the courtroom, inflamed by emotion and sensationalism, rushed to judgment.

``Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills'' is unique among courtroom documentaries in that the filmmakers, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, seem to have had complete access to both sides of the trial process, including private family meetings, conferences with lawyers, even sessions in the judge's chambers. The film opens with sad police video footage from the crime scene, showing the bodies as they were first discovered, and then reports how wild rumors swept the area about satanic rituals, animal sacrifice and blood drinking.

An highly influential documentary, I'll try to get it to spread also on the mule as nobody else seems willing to do it, but, guys and gals, KEEP IT SHARED.

Eheh, don't worry, I won't ! I'll still powershare CD1 for some days, then I'll move to CD2. I guess Kat got it from BT (I've uploaded only 500MB of it), so she'll be able to help me out with both CDs :D .

Completed CD1. TNX!

Was plesantly surprised to see the quality was rather good for being a vhs rip. Looks much better than the screenshot would suggest, IMO.

Just skipped through it, and was a little anoyed to hear silly rock music playing in the background at many scenes. That don't belong in movies at all, and just makes it seam '80s or something IMO. Doesn't add anything but anoyance to a film. It's the same with Pop, Rap & Techno. Alot of the times I get the feeling it's just the kind of music the filmmakers enjoy, thus making it the soundtrack.

I personally enjoy GOA very much, but would never put it onto a soundtrack (unless it was a scene at a party or something) if I was a filmmaker. It's fairly obvious that this kind of music just don't go well with making a scene scary/sad/whatever.

But I guess it might be probable that it's in context with the subject (perhaps the protagonists are rock fans or something) so I shouldn't be to predjudice.

seing as I've got much more segments on the sequel than most, I've had this on release for some time, and sent out several gb's of it, but you other guys've got to help out as well. I can tell what I'm sending out ain't spreading very well, cause if it did, everyone would have as many segments as I have.

Up the prio on the sequel, and we'll all be able to completed it soon.

Someone should probably make a sepparate post about it as well, so none will miss it.

It's Metallica all through the documentary. They used them because they're Damien Echols's favorite band. He's one of the West Memphis Three, the one sitting on death row right now currently to be exact. I guess when Metallica heard about the documentary and the purpose behind it, they said they could use whatever music of their's that they wanted and for free as a way of showing support. :)

Yeah, just finished watching both. Great viewing.

I'm sitting watching these crazy ass rednecks talking about what "FREAKS" these unfortunate three are because they wear black, like horror movies, Stephen King books, and are generally not like everybody else, and I look up at my collection of horror movies and King books and feel total empathy for them.

I even bought a book from Amazon, which'll be sent to Damien in prison. Hope he'll have a chance to read it...

**** SPOILER, Kinda****
Of cource there's no way to know for sure, but that father of one of the victims sure looks suspicious. Always contradicting himself, changing his story, the removal of his teeth???, the story behind why he lost his teeth?, his wife dying so mysteriously, spanking and 'dissiplining' his own kid as well as a neighbour's kid, saying himself he's coming from such a 'bumpy' past then suddenly saying he's been sooooo good and nice all his life, getting arrested then denying he ever was....
And worst of all is all his Religious blabberring! It's extremley obvious he's much more of a Fanatical Fundamentalist than any of the boys ever were, and the procecution said themselves that religion is often what gives maniacs cause for action.
It's not difficult to imagine a situation where some sort of 'disiplinning' went to far..

*Spoiler-ish*

I know exactly what you mean. It's easy to tell that there is something really off about that man. The whole business with the knife that he gave the filmmakers during the first trial. Couple everything that you mentioned and that crime scene pathologist that said it was more than likely than those kids were killed by someone that they knew..... Well, it just gets your mind working.

Of course, there's no way to be certain if he had anything to do with it, especially after all this time. But after watching those and all the research I've done over the years, it makes me very certain that those three sitting in jail now did definitely not do it.
