¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ SYNOPSIS ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤

A couple decided to push the boundries of reality filmmaking by setting up a website and offering depressed and lonely people the chance to become immortalized on film in their last breath. They were amazed by the sick and demented ways that people wanted to kill themselves. Just as you will be amazed as you try to decide whether these are really amazing special effects or something much, much more disturbing!

::::::::::::::: CRITIQUE:::::::::::::::

Quite possibly one of the most fucked up films I have ever seen, Suicide: the Movie is just that - death on a little disc. Originated in Germany, the Troma team decided to pick up the rights to this critically acclaimed, yet highly controversial feature.

Following two nameless directors through the countryside of Germany, viewers get a first hand account of varying degrees and circumstances surrounding suicide. In the film's opening segment, we're treated to a middle aged man awaiting the camera crew at a factory, where he is intent on leaping to his death from the building's high walls. After reneg-ing on the deal to commit the act, the man frantically runs from the camera and throughout the maze of one of the factory's top floors. When the camera finally catches up to the guy, he has already fallen through a window and lays many stories down at the foot of the building, sans his head. The camera pans out to show the man's lost part a dozen feet or so from the point of impact.

Although not captured directly on camera, the act looked convincingly real as did many of the subsequent instances. Although not every suicide recorded in the film holds an explanation to the victim's reasoning, the director's paint an incredible picture of despair through the eye of the camera for each situation. Whether it be the terminal cancer patient injecting a lethal dose of poison into his tumorous chest, or the hopeless heroin addict that injects a sizable amount of the brown shit into the vein of his penis, Suicide is readily available to convey the notion of hopelessness.

Gradually, through a "hidden" camera in the directors' automobile, we see that one of them (the male) begins to grow unstable after witnessing these acts, and actually craves morbidity and gore beyond what he has filmed. The female director (his girlfriend) begins to take notice of her partner's bloodlust, and what was once a joke becomes a serious situation when the male director pulls the trigger of a shotgun on a reluctant victim.

Up until the point where the male director becomes visibly unstable, it is hard to conclude whether the suicides caught on tape were in fact real, or staged. The needles used are actually injected into the subjects, the results are extremely convincing and the bitter taste left in the viewer's mouth is sustained until the end of the film, where one can finally determine if what they have witnessed is fact or fiction.

Suicide, although extremely graphic and disturbing, offers an accurate insight to the world of dilemna, life preservation and choice. Some instances tug at the viewer's heart, such as the cancer patient and ailing grandfather, whereas some, like the lesbian pill popping double suicide leave the viewer shaking their heads in bewilderment.

Much like every other Troma DVD, Suicide is loaded with extras from the NY based lunatics. From trailers, to music videos and even public service announcements on masturbation, Troma offers up a slew of shit to keep the viewer occupied for hours after the feature.

Regardless of the viewer's intentions, to see death or a great movie, Suicide will appease hands down. An incredible journey into the sensitive subject matter will definitely motivate you into thinking about the topic, and the constant streaming of tragedy across the screen will quiet the criticisms of the twisted fuck who just can't get enough of the Faces of Death. An absolute masterpiece in filmmaking, Suicide is a guaranteed welcome addition to the DVD collection.

Wow, good release for Troma and sounds like a really odd movie - err, I think I can't wait to see it
(BTW, the suicides aren't real, right?)

Snuff exists. The people who have it are too smart to let it get out, most of the time. Those two guys in California who had that dungeon filmed killings. Its out there. Its just mostly for personal use, I imagine.
TheNomad, don't worry, Troma didn't make this, they just released it.

Well, what about those videos from the Iraqi terrorists? Those had fairly high availability and were (probably still are) available on P2P. The only real difference is that the "actors" weren't actually willing to die, at all.

Ahh, the old Snuff discussion again. It's been debated to death. Most claim that "Snuff movies don't exist", while others say that "just because you haven't seen it....."

First of all we need to define what snuff is:
"a movie in a purported genre of explicit pornography culminating in the actual violent death of a participant in a sex act" according to Merriam Webster.
Now many will argue that whilst serial killers might have filmed such acts (the st. louis Killer, for one) the video(s) has to be sold, or at least attempted sold, in order for it to be snuff.

So Iraqi terrorist tapes are NOT snuff. 'Traces of Death' is NOT snuff. The Dwyer tape is NOT snuff.

Then it's the old "if it exist, why hasn't the FBI found it" discussion. Well I once stumbled upon some memoirs from an ex-FBI investigator who talked about snuff tapes. He said that they existed plentyfold, but they did not want the public to know about it for various reasons. I wish I could find some reference, but it's ages since I read that.

There was also a rich publisher of some magazine who promised a substantial sum to anyone who could provide evidence that snuff films actually existed. The sum has been up for grabs for years, but no-one have ever replied. (again wish I had some reference, but I imagine other peeps here will know what I'm talking about).

There are several urban legends which talks about friends of friends of relatives of friends who knew a guy who got ahold of a snuff film. I've heard several myself, but they're always flimsy as essential legends are. Evidence is never present.

Then there are a few cases of child porn circles, where the media has claimed that the purpotrators were also dealing snuff. This has always proved to be shock propaganda afterwards.

Actually rather amusing though is the story of the Guinea Pig film 'Flower of Flesh and Blood' which reputedly Charley Cheen got ahold of and was convinced was the real thing. He sent it off to the FBI who started an investigation and made terrible efforts in uncovering where it originated from. The original distrobuter of the tape in America has made a funny clarification (again wish I had reference) where he talks about how this great mess came to be, and how it COULD have been solved VERY easily. The rumour says though, that the FBI could not decide whether it was real or not, untill the Guinea Pig people released a 'Making of' tape, and the investigation was dropped. Would have loved to seen their faces.... The story continues in a more grim turn, however, as some Japanese wacko and horror fanatic (with a collection of horror films numbering above 5000. and this was way before divx of vcd's) started copying the events he'd seen in the Guinea Pig films. (bah. no reference again)

To sum it all up: NO, no official statement has ever been made from investigating forces, confirming the existence of snuff. But does the fact that just because you haven't seen it, mean that it doesn't exist? With all the weird, perverted stuff going around the globe, is it so crazy to imagine that someone once filmed the murder of a person, for money? When people have killed babies, cut open their corpses, stuffed them full of heroin, and used it for smuggling, (reference) then surley Snuff videos seam mild in comparison?

hehe, think this was a little before imdb got up and running.

The first time I got ahold of Guinea Pig it was on a black, unmarked vhs. It was some nth generation copy and the quality was so terrible, you could hardly make out what was going on. The intro text wasn't included, nor any other form of credits, and there were no subs. The guy who lent it to me made me promise that if I "got caught" I would not let anyone know where I got it from. Watching it that way was WAY more frightening than seeing it now in a crystal clear, subtitled dvd-rip.

That is the only way to watch guinea pig 1 or 2 (and the much newer august underground tapes). When I moved to Boston for college in 2002, I had made Vhs copies of Guinea Pig from really crappy dupes I made from Blackest Heart Media (RIP) dupes. One late night at the dorms, I played them in the student lounge with a bunch of drunk kids who had no idea about anything like them. The crappy quality convinced them they were snuff, and I was threatened. Thanks to IMDB, I was free of harm. Funny enough I think I sparked interest in those kids, who later wanted a copy. I told them no. The subtitles would have ruined the reaction. So recently I did the same thing with Mordum, but I copied it from DVD, and played it at a party at my house. People were VERY convinced it was real! Good fun for those with a dark sense of humour. People wanted copies until I showed them the DVD case, dissappointed it was fake. So who is the sicko; me, who thinks its entertaining to fake death (real death makes me feel dirty), or them, who don't even like horror movies, but want to see real death?

But anyway... snuff is real. I'm with the 'just cuz you aint seen it...' people. Makes you wonder if there snuff p2p sites buried out there.... I bet there is.
