Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)? Pan's Labyrinth (2006)? The Orphanage (2007)?

Pan's Labyrinth is not drama, it's a fairytale told in a very beautiful way. When I saw Amelie it must have been 2002 or 2003, which is also many years ago. Eternal Sunshine is on my (tremendous) "to watch" list.

I watch horror and sci-fi, not alot of other stuff.

One thing I can say is that I fucking hate drama and/or romance.

I mean I hate them with a vengeance, like I want ot destroy all copies of those types of films and then burn the cast alive.

Since there are so many people calling the wrong names on stuff, I don't look at the awards to see what type of movie it is. I watch it and then decide by myself. I think it's more of a fairytale than a drama. There are dramatic scenes, but still...

the fantasy of that film is all a response to how generally crappy she is being treated, its a fairytale sure but that's not a genre anyway... I won't hit you with a helmet, but i think there's a strong case for the film being called a drama as there is for it being called a fantasy :)

If you start applying narrow logic to things, Eternal Sunshine is a scifi, Amelie is a "foreign film" and The Orphanage is just a horror, and i necessarily wouldn't agree with any of those claims. They are both true and miss the point of the movies on one fell swoop :)

So I usually resign myself to allocating a main genre, and then attaching supplementary genres below them. I'm not an advocate of allocating a single genre based on a single bit of content, as you might have guessed when i take exception to people calling Alien a scifi instead of a horror. It is, if you choose to miss the point... if you know what i mean? :)

Yup, I do. I call a lot of movies scifi/horror for that same reason ;)

I'll go with the fantasy then, since it is more important to me in that film than the drama. The fantasy part made it beautiful to look at for me, which is one of the strongpoints in this film for me.

Fair game, just one for your consideration, have you ever thought about genres as a descriptor of a movie? Or more food for thought, have you consider that both fantasy and scifi are the weakest of genre descriptors and infact can be argued to be not real genres at all?

Action, Horror, Thriller, Drama all talk about pace and content of the story and do more to classify expectations, whilst fantasy and scifi cling to the presence of objects, or locations to justify themselves as genres, almost like cataloguing metadata. That's why they nearly always become underling classifiers of the actual 'big wig' genres, and why they don't really exist as bonified genres.

Scifi, fantasy and things like westerns don't seem as deep or overriding a description, in fact you can say something is a scifi and it means absolutely nothing to expectations and can even be completely misleading. Say something is an action scifi and you now have much more clarity because the action tells you the type of movie, and the scifi merely goes to classify itself as a subgenre. Say alien is a scifi and you have no idea what its about, say its a horror scifi and... well you get the picture :)

Just another reason why I don't like hanging on checklists of the presents of spaceships when describing a movie... back to alien again i guess

lol, yeah that was my dig a bit earlier on

Amelie is a "foreign film"

What would that even mean?

I think they need to replace "world" and "foreign film" sections with a "you'll need to read you dumb f*ck" section

I think that was supposed to be some kind of legible comment. It just ended up wasting bandwidth with pointless junk that has no relevance to the conversation.

Just like this post is.

(the) Blockbuster (store) I work at class(ify) Pan's (labrynth) as WORLD (cinema, and thus file it in the world section).

better?

So many people get turned off by subtitles, all the movies have big stickers on, twice the size of a fifty pence. when they bring it up I always say "you know this film is subtitled?" and 90% the time they say "oh....noo....I'll get abother one".

2 things, learn to read! and by that I mean read subtitles and read the box cover.

Wow. I'm switching you to decaf Tak. :D

I also really dislike romance and especially romantic comedy. Worthless IMHO.
As for drama it really depends. I tend to watch the really depressing dramas like
Remains of the Day. I have to be in the right mood to watch such things.

I've always taken the name Sci-Fi fairly literally when I think of describing
movies. Science Fiction - or science that has not been proven or as of
yet real. So, I would put Donnie Darko in the sci-fi genre (for it's time travel
motif which runs pretty strong throughout the movie). But you do have a point
about sci-fi being fairly weak as a genre. I think that is more the fault of
movie makers desire to use special effects and fancy props to 'wow' the
audience. I love Star Wars, but much of it is eye candy. Some sci-fi movies
are harder to look past the objects and get to the theories behind them.

Donnie Darko was a film that surprised me. I thought it would be crap but the wifey stuck it on and I actually really got into it.

One of those times when I think back and it is a good memory.

I will probably never watch it again though.
