You can find my gnome warrior on bloodhof, let me know which server you join etc and who knows we may see each other sometime.

I only started playing this a couple of weeks or so ago, only at level 24 so far - it is a big world out there.

 I've never played an MMOG before, I'm hoping it has a gentle learning curve.

Levelling up seems pretty quick though, l24 after only a few weeks is fairly quick, unless you're playing 24/7 of course ;)

Level 25 now after about 40hours play, if I spent less time helping other people and exlporing all of the area i could be higher.

Enjoy it and you never forget your first visit to Ironforge.

If you are having problems with funds as an alliance character I would suggest taking up mining and either skinning or herbalism at the start, collect as much trade goods as you can and then sell them at the auction house in IF, 20 copper bars goes for around 75silver.

Thanks, it's very clever in terms of learning curve, it introduces concepts in a very streamlined way and the interface is good. IIRC I'm up to level 5 or 6 now and about to chose a skill, mining was going to be one, I though possibly blacksmithing as the secondary?

guilty... ;(

mining is a good source for money.
herbs is a better source for money. (friend of mine is making shitloads of more money than I do :/)
Plus blacksmithing is cool for making your own armor. Havent had good experience selling armor. Seems like losing money on it.
Selling raw materials seems to be the best to do.

well I went the mining/blacksmithing route and in retrospect I would have gone for herbalism at the start , there are a lot of herbs to be found.

You can always switch your specialisation at a later date anyway, get some more bags though if you are going gathering, you can pick them up on AH at IF for reasonable prices.

Remember to list the auctions as 24hours and set a buy out price as well, I tend to put copper bars on at 75-80s buyout price and they have to date always sold. Currently sitting on just over 22g and I have not been to the AH this week at all.

I'll say that you've pointed out the exact reason, in this topic, why I don't play massive multiplayer games anymore but prefer a closed environment like NWN hubs

I thought it was about taking a role and sticking with it, but people are asking questions like which is better this or that, and using websites to find areas to loot. Where did the exploration and immersion go? Gamist type players are ruining many of these games for me. Luckily there are a few sancturias to go.

Just a thought. Not really aimed at anyone. What do you guys think?

 caught me

It's a good point, although in my defence, I've never played a MMOG before and it's quite a lot to get your head round

I have deliberately avoided "spoilers" and too much information, I have asked for advice, but the advice given here
A) isn't really a spoiler and
B) pretty much confirms what I had already guessed

I'm avoiding all the FAQ's etc though as I agree that it would be pointless in an exploratory / role playing game

I'm with member on the idea, but the thing is, you don't want to miss out on things so i at least understand why people use guides.

Well there are a lot of websites out there they can tell you where all the quests are and how to complete them etc, but I refuse to access them.

For me it has been about immersion and walking all over the map, I have died in some places that my mate, who has played for over a year, has never even been yet, I enjoy covering the map and finding new places and if need be runnng like crazy away.

The advice given to PCA is not spoilers at all, merely advice to someone starting out.

In game I have in the main found people very helpful, if you are stuck or in need a general shout will normally bring help or advice, joining a party and exploring makes a great difference, I now have a list of 12 "friends" who talk to me in game about how we are getting on.

It is about communiy and having fun to me.

Just my $1.30 cents worth. (too long for 25cents worth)

You've missed my point, well, atleast partly.

My point wasn't mainly about the spoilers (advice is more than welcome especially for players who are just starting out), but putting back roleplaying to the MMORPGs (if it ever was there). Now these gamist type of players are trying to "win" the game by using the most efficent character builds and forgetting all about the fun and enjoyment of playing that quirky character which feels your own, but not just some numbers and texts they've heard are good to have.

Because in many of the MMORPGs the only way to get experience is to go and kill monsters/players these weaker but interesting characters are often spit on, because you cannot get experience with them as fast as you can with others. I guess peer pressure is a part of this. These powergamers whose aim is to find super character builds often tip the balance over the edge and force others to join their ranks instead of finding their own way in the game world.

I have to agree that I thought it was about community and having fun, but many times it just comes down to whose father has the biggest, ehm, car. I've come to the conclusion that more players isn't necessary for the best. The amount of annoying people becomes higher exponentaly as well.

Don't get me wrong here. I do enjoy playing multiplayer games, but I'm sick and tired of these certain type of players who basically destroyed a few good MMORPGs and MUDs along the way. For instance, back in the day in BatMUD people would sell their loot over at the market by shouting something like "A good sturdy dwarven axe that makes you feel more powerful and agile" and stats (if you wanted to know) where told in a private message off character. Nowadays it's just "axe. +25 str, +10 dex, +20% dmg" over there and even worse in the public auction channel.

I must admit that the development of CRPGs has lead us here. The success of the likes of Diablo paved the way for hack 'n slash MMORPGs, when even back in mid-90's there were MUDs that had more complex and better working economy system and more options to gain experience than just to go and kill monsies.

Sadly, I'm somewhat overcritical and exaggerating about these things since playtesting games is a part of my work, but atleast people are responding ;)

Indeed I did miss the point to an extent.

I will try to keep this brief as we are in danger of going totally off topic :)

You do raise some valid points, to me the best ever RPG on the PC was NWN, there is nothing to match it, my actions affected the way people dealt with me etc etc

Where WoW does fall down is in things like encumberance, you are only limited by the capacity of your bags, never weight or strength, and my character will not age over time, as I am now I will always be just getting higher in levels and powers. That is not really a full RPG.

Many players will not got back to low level mob areas as they will not gain any XP from killing them, I have been asked what I am doing in no XP land before. Well quite simply killing the little devils so that I can get the cloth they drop to sell it later on or to use it in blacksmithing, the strong prey on the weak as it is in real lie.

There are some players in every community who think they know what is best for all players they can ruin it indeed, for me I ignore it, it is my character and if I want him to carry an axe instead of that nice sword I will, you know why? It looks cool when I swing it :D

We are too some extent like minded, but at the same time different and that is what makes the world a better place.

Peace and out, off to play WoW
