I've checked the FAQ but didn't really understand how the ratio works. All I know is that since yesterday, I get nothing up, nothing down :

Public torrent sites dont ban you, only the private ones enforce rules, & to give more than youve taken means at some point youre gonna reach saturation where noone is left to download it right? I'd stick to public sites, theyre still fast but they have a lot more dead trackers. Never tried utorrent, I use bittornado & by using that you can see quite quickly if the trackers dead or if noone can get past say 88% of the file.

But each to their own. I rarely torrent coz I dont like my IP being displayed.

Your ip is displayed on emule too. You're safe nowhere.

I stay on public trackers too, I just want to know how to conf' my client and understand how to use Demonoid properly.

I wouldnt worry too much about your ratio on demonoid. Ive downloaded and uploaded a couple of DVDs from there and my ratio still is the same as it was at two days after i joined. I still sont have any problem logging in and downloading from there so i dont; see why you would be getting problems.
