He's definitely seen bad rips, pick one of his movies and see how the studio's have ripped it to pieces. The wonderfully brilliant Brazil for example.
The ironic thing here is I wouldn't make do with a rip of his movies for a second, own most of them on DVD. Love brazil and Jabberwocky.

Thats the truth. Why don't they understand this?
Quality sells. If movies are of a high enough quality they you simply HAVE to have it in the collection don't you? (Do a poll and see how many on the forum have originals of Dawn of the Dead, or Evil Dead, to illustrate the point).
Piracy only kills the crap, thats why the "powers that be" are so terrified of it, because they find it so hard to make anything but crap.

Both of 'em here, two Evil Deads in fact, the Palace pre-cert VHS and the Elite Entertainment R1 DVD.
I did download the DOTD ultimate edition, I think it was Bassline that ripped it, cos I already had the directors cut DVD and didn't want to buy another one.

Thanks, I believe you made my point for me.
I honestly think theres few on this forum with less than a thousand DVDs in thier collection. We are all quite possibly in the top 2 percent of buyers in the film market, we keep those greedy f**kers afloat, but they still have the ordasity to blame us for thier falling sales.
And thier sales ARE falling, but it has more to do with thier constant re-releases (with an extra trailer or two) and thier annoying habit of discounting thier items a few months after release.
I mean, were not STUPID, we wont buy the initial release if we KNOW they'll release it with more extras - and CHEAPER - a month or so later.

Sounds to me like terry is just being a prick to his old bosses.. he isn't endorsing trading, backups, file sharing.. he is saying "I got screwed out some money, so if they wana screw them that is fine by me." The key word is "rip off" he still feels that it is a "ripp off" of the studios. I see nothing here to say he is supporting it.
I wounder what he would think is he felt he was getting fair treatment... sounds like he would be saying the same to us... you are ripping me off.. if you get busted fair enough.
I see nothing laudable in his comments..

Alex Cox would agree that Gilliam is "being a prick" - though for different reasons.
Gilliam is a person it seems who has little consistancy in his ethics. As long as he's getting the reaction he needs he will dither this way and that. I have no doubt that he would utterly screw us for screwing him.
I have very little respect for the man after the shameful treatment of Alex Cox and Tod Davies, even though I can't deny the brilliance of Gilliams movies.

No argument there... his movies rule...... but is he aware of the movie sharing scene?

Its all about the script to Fear and Loathing that Cox wrote with Tod Davies, after Cox got fired from the movie Gilliam essentially comandeered his script and petitioned the WGA to put his name on as a co-writer even though he actually didn't write any of it (he claims he did, but I've read both versions and the most you can say Gilliam did was EDIT). It seemed that originally Gilliam wanted to oust Cox completely from the movie, including writing credit, but all the WGA would do was put Gilliam down as co-writer.
Now I understand that writers can be very competitive, but Gilliam should have more sympathy with Cox. Both of them are basically "black-listed" by hollywood (though for VERY different reasons), and one hand SHOULD wash the other, but it seems to me that Gilliam put the knife in without any empathy.
Additionally Gilliam is badly thought of in hollywood because his movies run WAY over budget, and over schedule, with small returns. While Cox is badly thought of because of his political leanings, he tends to be critical of the American goverments foriegn policies, but his movies actually give good returns for low budgets.
So I'm on Cox's side because his problems are of ethics and personal conscience, rather than money and extravagence.
You can read more at http://www.alexcox.com/
I met Alex Cox once (work related) and we all went to the pub and he told us the whole story. He's still very bitter about it, but symultaneously kind of detatched; it almost seems he is self destructive.

The rift between the two directors is pretty much an open secret though, if in any doubt of its validity then check out http://www.smart.co.uk/dreams/flwga.htm
(this is Gilliams site).
The main point being that if Gilliam did "write his own script from scratch" as he maintained, they why was it almost identical to Alex Cox's?
The point being that either -
a/ Similarities existed because Gilliam rewrote Cox's script and therefore everyone deserved a credit. Therefore no WGA problem. But Gilliam denies this.
b/ For some reason Gilliam miraculously wrote a script that was nearly identical to Cox's in some wierd "unconnected symultaneous development" oddity. And therefore the WGA fallout. This is what Gilliam maintains.
Its a wierd situation, because neither party seems to hold any personel malice to the other. Gilliam in fact seems almost complementary to Cox, and Cox has admiration for Gilliams work (who doesn't?).
It seems that the waters were muddied too badly by Universal and the red tape of the system for anyone to truly KNOW what happened entirely.
But the basic arguement is - did Gilliam do a completely seperate script, or a rewrite?
Logic says - to me at least - that it was a rewrite.

Hell to catch when you want soup though. Good thing is that if you stick them on a carpet they might cook themselve with the friction.
