I recently signed up to one of these in the UK. I heard about them last year when they appeared on BBC News 24, or rather, Netflix, the original US site was appearing. Seems they have a patent out on the idea which is fending off Blockbuster and the like.
Anyways, for those not in the know, there is a flat subscription fee every month and for this you can rent out X number of DVDs at once. You compile a list of DVDs from their catalogue and they send them out as you send them back. This allows loads of dvd rentals a month for just one fee. You can keep these for as long or as short as you want, send them back via pre-paid/free post. When they get one back they dispatch another from your request list.
I've scouted around the uk versions and after testing what they had in their catalogue, it seems screenselect have the largest stock.
http://www.screenselect.co.uk
They give you a free trial (although you have to enter credit/debit card details). Their standard fee is ?14.99, and this allows 3 DVDs in circulation at once. You can pay ?11.99 for 2 at once, or ?16.99 for four.
You can also request dvds they don't have in stock:
http://www.screenselect.co.uk/welcome/s ... ?to_form=1
Anyway, using this I have compiled a list of many horror movies, tv series and other films. I've cancelled a lot of non-moving downloads in favour of renting and DVD5ing, and it will mean that I will get stuff that can be released for everyone.
What's the point of this thread? I was just wanting to inform people and secondly wondering if anyone else is a member of one of these (who your with, etc. ?)

I must admit, since getting dsl and emule, I never visit the video shops anymore. And on the rare occasions that I do there's never anything that's worth watching that I haven't seen.
So I'm assuming an online store would be the same.

Here in germany this service would be unsuable. The amount of disappearing mail here is unbelievable. I don't want to constantly proove that I did not get their package or that I really have send it back. Would be very expensive.

Quite the contrary its not alike. I have been able to rent lots of the dead downloads I had previously, and there is a great selection.
The video shops round here I never used at all, and haven't for some time. I rented a DVD a few months ago but that was on the off chance. Take a look anyway, for me at least its very different.

Might well have a look at that then.
Will they send out a big bag of sweets & some beer with the discs to satisfy ultimate couch potato laziness?

Netflix is great!!
They have sooooo much to choose from - way more than my local rental places. I get about 6 movies a week which averages to 24 movies a month for the same price for 5 rentals at one time from my local place.
No late fees and you can keep the movies as long as you want. When you return them they send more from your list.

the only downside of screen-select is that they don't rent games which would be a great area for them to branch into. I looked at net flix but went for screenselect.
They had more tv box sets and stuff that sprang to mind when quering the databases. How are they working out for you? How much you paying? How long does it take to send back and receive your next (ie time between returning and receiving).
Want to know I'm getting my moneys worth. ?15.99 for 3 dvds at once, I send back, takes a day to get there, a day to process (although two were done and dispatched in the morning so i got the discs the next day), a day or two to arrive. I get 6 DVDs a week thus far. Lots of horror and tv series at screenselect. You can pre-book some movies (i prebooked babylon 5 box sets) and can request new items. Since launching, Screen-select has bought out two of its rivals and aquired their stock

Can't get games from NetFlix.
Turn about is pretty timely for me. I usually get the next movies from my list about 2 days after returning.
My local rental place charges $20.00 to rent 5 dvds at 1 time.
With NetFlix, for $21.95 (with tax) a month, I can have 3 movies out at a time. They do have other packages.
The standard plan is unlimited rentals with 3 movies out at one time. Available plans include:
Ultimate - 8 movies out at a time for $39.95, and
Plus - 5 movies out a time for $29.95
Standard - 3 movies out a time for $19.95
Economy - 2 movies out at a time (limit: 4 rentals per month) for $13.95.

oh yes your from the states
It sounds like we are getting the same deal, well i think ?15.99 is slightly cheaper, but screen-select has only about 16,000 titles... i guess netflix owns that catalogue ten fold due to the fact it's so much older.
There's pricing stuctures at screen-select very similar but, I don't think its as much "value" for 2 or 5+ dvds, i mean 3 is perfect

But not here in Germland. It is forbidden to copy copy protected material. And except for some porn (I heard ) everything is copy protected. So no copying here.

Sorry to bump an ancient thread but thought would be better then creating new one
I'm currently shopping for an online DVD rental site and from my investigation ScreenSelect do look like the best option.
Thought would do a forum search to see if any one has asked or discussed them and this was the only thread.
So spud are you still with ScreenSelect?
Or have you moved to a better one through experience?
I'll probably sign up this evening for Screen Select

yes, they've taken over lots of the other competitors so their dvd stock has been integrated into the screenselect catalogue. Best option in the uk imo. I'm still using them and get decent turn around on the dvds and the horror selection is large.
If your signing up, I found out they have an affiliate scheme so dead-donkey can get £6 too since they've got an affiliate scheme:
http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic.php?t=4501
affiliate link:
http://www.screenselect.co.uk/?refer=af ... _code=AFFL
Which is a nice bonus too
General experience of online renting, some companies throttle your discs, for example if your getting, copying and sending back in quick succession. I don't think screenselect do this like companies like netflix do, or if they do its only for a short time. I've got some discs that my dvd-rom couldn't copy, but my brothers pioneer is forgiving for whatever reason and usually copies them.

I've used the free trials of both Blockbuster & Screenselect and both were good with quick turnarounds, although if you want new (last few weeks) releases I'd go for Blockbuster.
They seem to buy more copies of recent DVDs, and Screenselect didn't send me any during their trial, just movies that had been out a few months ago or so.
Both were good though, and Screenselect had an easier way of prioritising your selections.

Just as a heads up. If you sign up for a free 21 day DVD rental trial through http://www.sendit.com (they use screen select for the rental service), you get two £10 vouchers to use against any order (over £10) at Sendit.
I signed up, got my first disc, copied it and sent it back, cancelled and got my vouchers. Just ordered Season 1 of Green Wing for £5.99 using one of the vouchers.
