I moved recently, and the place in which I'm now living comes with the internet -- meaning I don't get to pick my ISP. This new ISP throttles bandwidth and blocks all inbound connections that aren't http or https. I've tried without luck for a few days to connect to either a server or KAD without luck. I tried contacting tech support to ask about TCP ports, and they told me they can't help me. I can still use BT, but only with protocol encryption, and at speeds not above 60kb/s.

I'll still visit this board regularly, but chances are, I won't be using the Mule in the near future. :(

Well, If Usenet is of interest, STR rips will be posted there from now on :)

you can't get DSL? Surely there's the option not to use that one that is provided and use the phone line?

I've been thinking of posting to newsgroups too, but i don't have the upload to do it really (256kb/s)... anyone want to do it for me? :wacky:

I've actually been thinking about that -- I was never able to figure the damn thing out and am too cheap to pay for good access, so maybe now is the time to get things straightened out in one or both of those departments.

I definitely cannot change my ISP, it's part of the building agreement. Thanks for condolences everybody, maybe I'll figure out Usenet so I can more easily participate here. :)

Oh man I'm sorry you have to stop with ed2k. My old ISP throttled all p2p traffic too. I could just about scrape along at 20 KB/s dl on emule, but I stuck with it for a while. I used Bittorrent more though and came to like it. Have you tried the 3 emule mods that support encryption - probably not much use considering your new isp's implementation but worth a last shot - Neomule, Sion and one other whose name esacpes me now.

Thats a bummer man! What kind of building agreement forces internet? Weird.

Hope you can get emule back someday soon.

yeah its weird, but the apartment complex has probably got a sweet deal with a telecoms company. I take it you've got no choice over your telephone company either? Or is this an ethernet port? (if so, once again, why not dsl over the phone :) )

Only sweet thing about apartment buildings is you might be able to find some unsecured wireless access points ;)

I was reading over in the utorrent forums today about this. And they had a few solutions to getting around your ISP throttling you.

"try to find out what ports your ISP uses for NetMeeting/VoIP/Xbox Live etc. then use them instead..."

They recommend 1720, 443, 80, 21, 110 and as a last resort, 25.

Don't know if this will help you but it is worth the try.

It turns out that ALL the ports are closed. I can still use BT at reduced speeds, but only with forced encryption, and can't get usually more than 2kb/s per person. The only way I get good speeds is if the torrent has 150+ connectable people.

I know, I tried using it with encryption. It wasn't able to connect on any server or KAD, the requets just timed out.
