Well I know alot of us burn our movies to dvds. So how do you store them? Right now I have a huge Case logic case but alot of my dvds are getting scratches on them
Is there any better systems to hold dvds?

I buy the cases that hold about 400 dvds from ebay for about £12. The sleeves are lined so they dont get scratched. Haven't had a problem yet

I've tried many systems: 1) cd/dvd book 2) Printed cases: 
3) Spindles: 
4) DVD carosel: 
5) and the best solution, hdd: 
1) scratches, ordering, annoyance 2) space and time 3) space, management is a bitch 4) I need to write a java api to access the disks and write a piece of management software (time) 5) Easy, but i still need something to manage it all. |

i guess i should also hijack this thread and ask, does anyone have suggestions on hdd storage, as you can see in that last picture, anti-static vs clamshell (seagate seashell) vs none. I would like something akin to the segate/samsung hardshells. |

nope, HD401LJ http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/94165/sa ... 401lj.html Maxtors are the shittiest drives in my experience, Samsung and Seagate are the quietest. WD are quite good. These aren't stressed in anyway, they are only in pcs when i need data from them. Its for backup not active. |

Thats true, all maxtors I ever had died eventually 
And yes those Samsung shells are pretty neat for storing hd's. What you could do is contact an (online) computershop and ask if they have those. Could be they are willing to ship some for a nice shipping fee. |

I have a lot of Maxtors, so far I've had no problems. After they got sold I started buying Samsung. IMO the shitiest HDDs used to be IBM. |

Do some googling and look at the numbers. Although i suppose you could try and argue its because maxtor has sold more. I think i've had two hdd failures, both Maxtor's. edit: nope, i've had three, 1 a deathstar, and 2 maxtors. I'm pretty sure maxtor failure rate had a lot to play in seagate's acquisition of them, infact i'm almost positive it was the collosal failure rate for OEM drives to companies like Dell, etc. that forced them out of business. They ended up loosing all of their staff and the quality control was the pitts in the end. IBM had one disasterous range of deathstars, apart from that their record was very decent while they lasted, but the damage was done and they ended up selling the hdd division. I bought one of their duds from the dud range. Its no longer IBM that owns the hard drive division though. I was thinking about putting my death star on ebay as a collectors item

It extended right back to Diamond Max 6 i believe, they were all terribly bad on the fault rate. There were a couple of PATA drives that were okay (I have one as an emule temp drive that seems fine (its very old), but this is an exception rather than the rule) |

My PATA Diamond Max 6-8 drives have been in service for quite some time with no probs. Also a lot of prople I know use them with no problems. I think the SATA drives suck though. I've bought 2 Maxtor SATAs IIRC and both gave me problems from the get-go. Worst HDDs I've ever seen were the IBM DTLAs, while the DTTA before and the IC series after weren't exactly what you would call reliable, the DTLA were the pits. |

Subjective reasoning, you know. PC_Arcade, except there doesn't appear to have been any internl changes to the maxtor division since their acquisition and the drives are still rolling out of their factories. I think your crazy to buy their branded stuff still when you can get cheaper, better performing and more reliable hdd.

True, but I never said otherwise. Point is I know about a significant amount of HDDs with no problems and haven't had any myself. When cooled properly I believe they're ok (models before DM 9 in my experience at least). |

I think head crashes were more common than heat problems/ The other big problem for maxtors was the spinup/spindown/seak problem. Both of them are mechanical/construction issues. That's why maxtors tended to be get review comments about them being very noisey and 'clicking' more. I still don't trust them as a brand, poor construction isn't guaranteed to have been fixed if they are using the same facilities. Feel free to buy them and all that, I'd just advise against it and view it more of a roulette wheel than more expensive brands. Its really worth the extra price for a brand with quality control. I'll put it this way, I wish i'd spent the extra money and not cheaped out on the maxtors.  I still have some maxtors and don't trust them for the most important data.

On account of my experiences with the later models I don't buy them anymore anyway. Last two I bought were Samsungs (1 300 GB and 1 500 GB). My eMule HDD is also a Samsung 160 GB, it has been running 24/7 for almost two years now. So I guess, I'll stick with them. Seagate: I don't know if I even got one, I lost track: Got 20+ HDDs or something.

i think seagates are the quietest around. If you want the most reliable, silent and 'best' hdd around, buy laptop hard drives. Downside is they don't work in hotswap bays... doh. |
