Well I normally use gknot, and visiting http://gknot.doom9.org it seems a new version is out and there's something called autoknot too whatever that is.

I'm about to rip something for the first time in months and just wondered what everyone was using.

Is there any reason to make the job more difficult?-

Well,I have used Gnot, the gnotitfast4you(autoGnot),and then just basic vdub and nandub. For capps i have been just using vdub with the deinterlace filter on 2 pass divx5.1 or whatever the newest pro version is.The autognot is pretty good but I definately need to do a bit more faq reading for aspect ratio's.I kind of have the same problem with Gnot itself since I can never seem to get the ratio I want...which is as close to the dvd as possible.I realise there is probably a fool proof way on using that and getting my desired results but I get a bit impatient with all that shit.It seems it always wants to go into a 640 ratio and that is not at all satisfactory to me...so until I figure it all out I stay with just the basics even though it takes awhile.....yes..I am a sadist and a masochist :beerchug:

okay doke, so everyone is using the latest version. I have an old version so i might as well update. I use gknot for tv caps too, it helps get all settings correct.

I knew I would get some sort of healthy responce from you
I may try gnot on my next batch of capps....I think I need a step by step guide on how to use it...by step by step I am meaning preschool level here..I already read through Doom9's and a few others on how to set it up properly, the main thing I got the problem with is that damned slider bar with the bit rate and aspect ratio..not one guide gives a definate answer to that question, they all just pretty much state that you have to play around with it until you get the desired results...to me that means guess work and it makes me feel rather uncomfortable :? I'll be waiting at the community whipping post for your responce

Read more carefully, it distinctly says its a bit of guesswork and tells you what to set it to initially, but then you do a compressability test. From there you then move it so it isn't in the red and you have a low % AR error/ highest res :)

That's how you use that number.

Adjusting the slider to ~16bits/pixel (even if it goes into the red) seems to give good all round resolution & bitrate.*

*Disclaimer : The above info was from the keyboard of Mr PC_Arcade so if it's bollocks, blame him

okay for those doing xvid with latest build, seems you have to unchck Discard first pass if you want compressability test to work. Didn't know that :(

I'm i the only one ripping with fairuse (the new open source version)?
Very easy to use, very good results, fast (it wasn't before, but this new one is), decrypts and cache dvd on hd, builtin xvid/divx5 encoder etc..

What's wrong with VC?
If it was Visual "slow as hell" Basic i would agree with you, but i like Visual C! :-)

I like Blitz3D too, actully done two games with it, but i've got bored and never finished any of them... Was thinking about doing an HHAH FPS game using hhah members as villains, but it would require to much work...
