I HATE THIS CRAPPY OPERATING SYSTEM!

After the whole week of work (and it was day and night, really) I decided to move my files to another folder, and here a surprise:
they disappeared from the source folder and didn't appear in the target folder. No sign of them on hdd. Tried searching by name, content, and then used several recovery tools (I really love Recover My Files, it's so much better compared to symantec unerase wizard). Have you guys ever heard a similar story?

The deadline was yesterday, just wanted to polish the files one last time before sending them to my employer. Now I have to start from the scratch. And I must tell you, this was not a pleasant job.

BILL, GIVE ME MY FILES BACK! :matrix:

I wanted to make a backup. In fact, I was just making it. But I clicked move instead of copy, and then there was too late. My mistake, but it shouldn't have deleted the files anyway, now should it? :(

How the fuck is it possible they've just dissapeared without a trace? There were 5 of them and I managed to recover 1, but not from the actual file - it was just some temp file that wasn't deleted.

I have had this before a few times, that is why if I have the space I will copy the files as opposed to cut and paste or whatever. Once I have verified they are where they should be then I kill the originals.

One other thing, I was using burst copy thingy and a few times it lost files.

They are lost forever. I finally gave up in the morning and decided to spend another week doing the same work once again.

Alright, you primitive button-using screwheads, listen up: THIS... is my SHORTCUT KEY!!! (ctrl-x) :outsider:

(cut) Ctrl-X then (paste) Ctrl-V, I don't see how its possible to f*ck up that way, if it doesn't appear then you've probably clicked cancel and then deleted the source (even then this takes two key strokes). Things don't just dissappear in my experience, not even in M$ software

Now stop ragging on Bill

@Spud, this was really pretty straightforward. I just dragged the folder to another folder using the RMB and chose move from the context menu. Should be as effective as your magical shortcuts.

Actually no, if you mess it up you can drag to X, wrong directory, etc.

However, it's a very slow and clumsy way of doing it (basic HCI theory proves this undoubtedly*).

Try managing files with Ctrl-X, CTRL-C and CTRL-V. I think you'll always use it from then on anyway. It's faster for sure, but i also personally find it more convienant, although I know my dad's dug himself into a little rut with doing things the quirky/newbie way and refuses to change  I was trying to teach him all the O/S shortcuts but he's a numnuts

Anyway, as daft as it may sound, it is very overly-complicated in a cognative sense in comparison, and although it may seem insignificant, using the shortcuts for management speeds up the task, ensures its done correctly and relieves a tiny bit of stress on your noggin.

See I do learn stuff in uni (besides drinking :beerchug:  )

*there's theory time calculations [grab a HCI book, it's a basic concept in them all] but I best not get into that, I'll paraphrase;
Its pretty obvious that its slow and requires more movement, focus and stress to use the mouse over the keyboard (ie. find location, find source, drag source, pinpoint location, move mouse, check, release mouse is the process, its done too fast to notice but that's what your brain does each time  ).

@Spud, I usually use my keyboard whenever it's possible, but sometimes when my hand is on the mouse I'm just too lazy to switch to the keyboard, ok? :(

But believe me, I realise all the advantages of shortcuts over mouse. :)

WTF Spud? I gotta say that lately you been getting evermore twisted. I think perhaps you have been hanging around too much with us.

For your next assignment we will require to see a dead polecat in a plastic bag.

I have installed a backup utility which will backup my working folder once every hour. On a separate partition. Let's see how you cope with this, Mr Gates.
