Quote:
The Horror Channel has signed a new contract with Kingston for fully-managed playout, satellite uplinking and space segment. The exclusive transmission deal follows intense competition and keeps The Horror Channel's plans on track for launch on BSkyB at the end of March 2004.

Kingston has worked with The Horror Channel's MD Tony Hazell to design the most efficient solution. By using Kingston's 'one-stop' DTH broadcast facility, The Horror Channel can rely on just one supplier for the ingest, playout and satellite services. It is the latest of more than 30 BSkyB channels to select Kingston inmedia as transmission partner.

"Kingston inmedia is the ideal broadcast service provider for The Horror Channel," says Tony. "It has the expertise to allow us to deliver dedicated quality horror programming to fans for the first time. By consolidating all our requirements with Kingston, we don't have the hassle of dealing with multiple suppliers and can free up time that's better placed elsewhere at this crucial stage of the channel's development."

The Horror Channel will supply schedules to Kingston electronically. Kingston will then ingest the content onto disk for playback according to the schedules. Kingston will also provide 'as-run' logs suitable for BARB analysis. The 24/7 fully managed playout centre will enable the Horror Channel to extend broadcast time beyond 6pm-6am to 24 hours a day.

Kingston inmedia's Director of Sales for Broadcast Services, Matthew Ivey, says: "The Horror Channel is an exciting project for us and further confirms us as the broadcast services supplier of choice for many channel operators who rely on us to take them onto the Sky Digital platform. Our services are helping to fill gaps in the market for channels like The Horror Channel, reducing costs and taking them on air quickly.

If you know many horror fans, you have probably heard rumblings about The Horror Channel. The project has been in development for some time and there was even an on-line petition circulating a while back. Well, it's now official. The Horror Channel is launching just in time for Halloween 2004.

The Mission of the Channel is: To create the first and only 24-hour digital cable network dedicated to the Horror genre and to become the branded television gateway for the underserved Horror fan base.

The more cynical among you may be imagining a lame Sci-Fi Channel type network only focused on horror movies. A channel that would feature a few cheesy original shows and then fill the rest of their airtime with Friday the 13th movies that have all the tits and blood edited out. Fortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. The channel plans to present all films un-cut and un-edited and when possible in the letterbox format. Very cool.

To make the project even better, check out the amazing roster of creative advisors they have assembled to help guide the programming:

• John Carpenter - Director, Screenwriter, Composer
• Roger Corman - Producer, Director
• Don Coscarelli - Director, Writer, Producer
• Wes Craven - Director, Screenwriter, Producer
• Guillermo del Toro - Director
• Mick Garris - Director
• Stuart Gordon - Director, Screenwriter
• Tobe Hooper - Director
• Lloyd Kaufman - Director, Screenwriter, Producer, Actor
• Alfredo Leone - Producer, Writer, Director, Inventor
• Lucky McKee - Director
• Robert Parigi - Writer, Director
• George Romero - Director, Screenwriter, Actor
• Eli Roth - Director
• Tom Savini - Make-up Artist, Actor, Special Effects
• Joe Wolf - Producer
• Rob Zombie - Musician, Director

So it looks like The Horror Channel has a shot at being something very cool. Get ready to upgrade your cable to digital so you won't miss out on all the gory goodness.

wow it gets better:
Quote:
Esteemed cult horror writer Jonathan Sothcott has been named as the head of programming for upcoming niche station 'the Horror Channel'.

Also a director and producer, Sothcott will have the responsibility of acquiring all movies and programming for the channel, which launches May 3rd on Sky.

"Jonathan recognises exactly which films horror buffs want to see," said Horror Channel MD Tony Hazell. "His excellent contacts in the industry mean The Horror Channel has access to more of the best horror movies than anyone else."

What is The Horror Channel?

The Horror Channel Limited is the UK’s first channel dedicated to horror movies, TV series and the people who make them.

When will it launch?

The launch date is set for 3 May 2004.

How can I watch The Horror Channel?

The Horror Channel will be available free-to-air on BSkyB from 3 May 2004.

What section of the EPG (electronic programme guide) will The Horror Channel be on?

The Horror Channel will transmit on Sky Guide number 330.

What times will The Horror Channel be on?

From the channel’s launch on 3 May, you can watch it every night from 6pm until 5.30am. We also hope to build our broadcast time to 24 hours a day – within the UK’s watershed guidelines for content – in the near future.

Why won’t The Horror Channel be broadcast 24 hours a day?

We want to broadcast movies without censoring them. We also have to adhere to UK broadcasting restrictions which means 6pm until 6am is perfect for our programming.

As we expand our audience and extend the channel with material we can screen at other times, we’ll broadcast the stuff you love for longer, without compromising on content.

Will The Horror Channel censor movies and programmes?

The Horror Channel is the first UK channel to finally give horror fans the specialised service they have missed out on for so long. We will only make changes to original films and programmes if they do not comply with UK law – we want you to see as much of what you want as possible!

Will The Horror Channel run commercials?

The short answer is ‘yes’. As a free-to-air channel, the only way for us to earn revenue is through commercials. However, we’re sure our exciting programme package will more than compensate for a few short commercial breaks.

Is the Horror Channel in the UK the same as the Horror Channel in the USA?

No. They are run by different companies and operate on different broadcast platforms. The Horror Channel in the UK is the only channel to cater to the exact needs of horror buffs on this side of the pond.

Will it be available on any other platforms?

The Horror Channel is looking at other broadcasting platforms to help reach an even wider audience. We hope to extend the channel to cable and are negotiating a deal with ntl for the end of the year.

Which countries can view The Horror Channel?

Any country which receives BSkyB’s free-to-air channels.

Which satellite does The Horror Channel use?

Eurobird (28.5?E).

Will you show series?

Around 80% of our programming is movies so we will have some classic creepy series as well.

Will The Horror Channel show foreign-language films?

Euro-horror fans shouldn’t despair! There’ll be plenty of Bava, Fulci and Argento to keep you happy, as well as some really obscure titles. As a rule, titles that were not originally made in the English language will be broadcast in our Horror Around The World slot at midnight.

We’re also working with Salvation to produce a branded midnight slot featuring the pick of their uniquely provocative crop.

I can’t see my favourite movie in your line-up? Does that mean you won’t show it?

No! We’ve got a huge amount of horror programming and we’re getting hold of more all the time to make sure.

Keep an eye on the schedule for full programme listings.

Looking good, although they had the lamest launch I've ever seen for a new Channel.

Where where the spice girls like 5 had :P

Oh and it looks like they keep their HORROR channel logo in the top right while playing movies, but no biggy :)

Probably it means that if a movie has received BBFC cuts, then that's the version that they'll show. So no uncut Cannibal Holocaust then. :?

I wouldn't have thought so, the BBFC ruling is not law. They merely put out guidelines which people are advised to follow, and like councils did with Spiderman, can blatantly ignore them if they so wish. I think the wording of that sentance is reffering to the ITC, and not to the BBFC.

I believe they will be referring to actual movies that have a) been banned by parlaiment b) instruct on how to break the law c) contain any material that is deemed unlawful.

That said, a lot of the time it will be following what the BBFC says I'd suspect, afterall this is what they are meant to be doing. But I'd expect them to ignore the bbfc's controversial rulings with many prints, and if they don't...well a lot of people are going to be very dissappointed.

What they will have to comply to, as far as censorship goes, is the ITC, who are the television censors. They are more 'lax than the BBFC to be honest, they only seem to respond when people make complaints, and with a channel dedicated to horror who in their right mind would do this?

I've got high hopes that censorship will be sidestepped, but I guess we won't know until they put out the obscurities :)

DO THE BBFC CUT FILMS SHOWN ON TV?
No. Television companies normally show versions already classfied for either cinema or video. If the TV station sees fit to cut the movie, they do it in-house. The BBC and ITV cut films more often whereas Channel 4, Channel 5 and British Sky Broadcasting tend to leave them alone.

:)

found on this great FAQ about censorship:

I can back up Spud's arguement as Film Four in their hayday, when they had a film channel dedicated to EXTREME Cinema, showed MANY films that were NOT classified by the BBFC or they showed fuller versions then were on DVD or video etc etc.

I cancelled my subscription immedietly after they confirmed they were scrapping Film Four:Extreme :(

yeah film four rocked, shame they went bust :( The channel is still there but its a shell of a channel.
