*Shakes fist at the brits*
I'm just about to order a big bunch of books, when I notice that they cost 25% extra, which is 80 ? in this case. I always hate the government, im a libertarian, but at moments like this, I hate them a little extra (about 25% extra). You brits can order books without worrying at all. I mean, have you seen this? http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/ ... 49-9848433
Also, your prices on films and music are a little below average.
Thats just pure evil!!!
Please take pity on me (and tell me that I can use you, any resident of EU except slovakians, as a intermediate stage and have you write "Gift on the package )

WTF are you talking about? Everything here gets 17.5% VAT, its an absolute f*cking disgrace that we are charged more than the rest of europe and the states for no apparent reason. Whoopty-doo we are an island, that doesn't explain the huge price differences.
When you see that a car costs ?3000 more just because someone moved it across a bit of water, you wouldn't be sprouting this.
DVDs, CDS, and electronics are miles cheaper on the continent. There's huge price fixing here, and its absolutely scandelous. Why do you think the supermarkets over buy them in bulk and manually change the plugs themselves? And what's worse is they get sued for doing that, since the electonic companies don't like the fact that someone dares to charge a more reasonable price.
Alcohol and Cigs cost a bomb more than most other countries, definitely every one i've ever been to.
We get taxed to buggery over here, why do you think all the tourists complain about how expensive it is?
If you find products are cheaper over here, don't think its the norm and most likely a product thats actually made here.

Even worse when cars built HERE, can be bought cheaper after they've been shipped overseas.

Relax spud, you misunderstood me (and I should have expressed myself better). What I'm pissed about is the goddamn VAT, you have nothing to be mad about. My post was not meant as an insult, and I don't understand how you can interpret it in that way. All I was saying was that I envy you brits, because you can buy books from amazon, with no VAT on them.
In Denmark were charged 7,5% more than you, WE are charged more than the rest of europe. Why dont you look at my link, before bursting out in anger?

well pick on the french then, but we pay a hell of a lot more than everyone else.
Amazon isn't a uk based company, they are based in jersey or something daft to avoid taxation, but they still have to pay import duty and VAT (its added to the basket at checkout I think)
You can get books cheaper if you go to one of the auctions anyway, they normally import them and get around the huge tax rules.
But saying we pay less is silly, since this is a minute case, only if we bypass local taxation is that possible, and just think about the places where they are being imported from. Those are the real lucky people Prices here are hugely inflated across the board
@DJBenz... they still make cars here? I thought they downsized everything to india

But still you're more lucky than me
I'm not sure what you mean with "bypassing local taxation". Can you please explain?
I was just wondering, if my idea was going to work: Say, if I had a friend in Great Britain, and I ordered the books to his adress, and made him write "Gift" (gifts can't be taxed, IIRC) on the package, and send it to my adress, would it then be possible to avoid the VAT?

There are still a few built here; Jaguar, MG, Land Rover and the smaller niche cars, TVR, Lotus, Noble etc. I'm sure the governments high taxation will manage to drive them to cheaper countries eventually though. A lot of car companies are trying to outsource design work to India to reduce costs. Customs are tight, you have to state on what it is and they x-ray a quota, so its hit and miss. I've been nabbed by customs but its because play friggin' well stamp on the front how much the DVD is worth. However, customs don't give a crap what's going out, its your customs that could nab you with fees.
Here, basically, 17.5% has to go on DVDs, if you buy abroad, you don't pay this 17.5% obviously, just duty if it goes over about ?30 in value at customs. So if you buy dvds from another country, the value normally means you pay no tax or duty beyond p&p. One of the reasons Play is so cheap.
