Hollywood studios are considering radical plans to bring forward the date that DVDs are released in an attempt to fight against the continuing rise in piracy.

The move comes out of a recognition of the increasing importance of DVDs, it being not uncommon for certain territories to make more money on a film through DVDs than the box office takings.

Barry Meyer, chairman and chief executive of Warner Bros Entertainment, said it is conceivable that one day DVDs will be released on the same day as the theatrical release.

"The day you have a public performance of a movie anywhere in the world, you can count on the fact there will be a physical product on the streets of Asia, Eastern Europe (and) Russia within a few days," Meyer said, citing the example of Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets, which was on sale in Shanghai on its opening day.

Many film fans also prefer to wait for the release of the film on DVD rather than spend more money going to the cinema.

Sounds good, but then again, they could just be replacing TS' with DVDrips, which is something I'm sure they don't want. However, this way at least they make even more money and won't have this right that piracy is hurting profits and that because of piracy they can't have gold plated shark tanks by their luxury pools.

Reference is from a login site, so its pointless posting a link. I'm sure bbc.co.uk or any other news site will have info on it.
