How fast can it go?
For the moment, though, more households can buy BPL from Current Communications than from any other company. Current offers three price ranges based on speed: One megabit per second costs $29.95 per month, 2 megabits per second costs $34.95, and 3 megabits per second costs $39.95. This is about the same speed and price as DSL and cable, but there's one important difference. Current Communications delivers a "symmetrical" service, where your upload speed is as fast as your download speed. Cable and DSL are "asynchronous." Your download speed may be fast, but your upload speed is only a fraction of that ?typically 80 percent or 90 percent slower. (Satellite upload speeds are even worse.) The ability to deliver synchronous speeds is unique to BPL, and more and more Internet users require a fast upload speed to get the most out of the Net. File-sharers upload files all the time, but there are other examples. Internet telephony requires some amount of uploading anytime you're on the phone, and video instant-messenger applications upload data, too.

yes, this was on the news last year (Look North ), but from what i've read the technology is utterly terrible. They simply can't filter out the static and you can rarely acheive anywhere near maximum potentional, getting so much interferance that its almost worthless using it and current adsl/cable is far superior.

It is a aparantly, also really insecure, without using the telephone system, it simply broadcasts data, so anyone along the line with a packet sniffer can intercept your data.

Shame really, sounded great.

I guess unstable and insecure goes along with most new technologies. They tout improvements, so hopefully it will come of age and be a sweet alternative.

i had wondered wot happened with those trials in the uk and if anything had come of it....but i guess as long as it is as insecure as it sounds and there are probs with qos atm there ain't gonna be much of a market for it.

I believe they had extended trails in Sweden or Norway or one of those third world countries (that's a joke nor-swedish people ) and it basically turned out to be totally pathetic and useless.

Avoid like the plague (internet/powerline technology, not norway and sweden )

Well, I'm not really sure to tell you the truth, but if we do, nothing is beeing done about it at least.
An alternative to powerline technology is of course SHDSL (I think it's called), if you're willing to relinquish some cash! Alas, I don't have the cash to relinquish.. I'm stuck with the worst line available. 756/128

But internet wise, Norway is SHIT seriously. The best line we have that normal people can afford is like 1800/256 (or something of the like) and that's only available in Oslo. The connection most people have is 1024/256 which basically is pure shit as well. If you're willing to pay 1500-2000$ to set it up, you can of course get a 10MB/10MB line You also have to pay an absurd amount of money every month though.. I can't be sure this information is accurate, but I'm pretty sure I read something along these lines some time ago. heh.

you will when you drop packets like shit and get constant massive corruption. Broadcasting packets is terribly insecure and as a result there's a serious lack of data integrity.

At least in your countries u guys have the chance to get lines of 2,3,4 mbit at low prices,in portugal our motherfuckers ISP?s give us shit lines at high prices,for my adsl 512\128 line i have to pay ?53.55 a month !!!

You can get €s for less than a ? at any nightclub... wouldn't touch that shit though.

2mb/"256" for ?37.99, I don't know what that is in any third world currency like $ or Es.

I have had the same cable connection since 1999 and I cant see any problem with it. Even if I did drop packets, I dont care. I will redownload what ever I want. I have no bandwidth caps.

I started with @Home, 3MB advertised - 5+MB actual, and then Comcast got me, and capped me to 1.5MB. They reupped me to 3MB at the first of the year.

cable is not a powerline connection, a powerline connection is where they use your electical plug socket to deliver a connection to the internet as well as power your house. Commercially it is unavailable anywhere that i'm aware of, so I think your getting powerline with cable modem mixed up?
