According to this
Quote:
The idea of zombies was introduced to mainstream western culture in 1929 when William B. Seabrook wrote The Magic Island, detailing his observations of life in Haiti, including the practice of voodoo. Zombies are part of the voodoo religion, although only of a small subsect, referred to as the "cult of the dead." The practitioners of mainstream voodoo typically wanted nothing to do with these necromancers, according to Seabrook. Nevertheless, in the decades to come, in western culture the ideas of voodoo and zombies became inextricably intertwined.

The release of this book inspired a movie in the burgeoning film industry, White Zombie (1932). In it, a young couple stopping off in Haiti to get married fall victim to "Murder" Legendre, a voodoo practitioner played by Bela Lugosi. The zombies in this film are fairly close to Seabrook's portrayal: they are mindless slaves being used as cheap labor. They need to be taken from the grave almost immediately after being buried; if they have started to rot, they are no good. Seabrook's zombies won't attack you, either. When they aren't working away under the eye of their master, they're staring blankly into space.
(found in spud's 'Zombie [Proper] post

I'm suprised this one isn't available!
I've got it on my dvd rental list but it might take em months to get round to send it me. I decreased the priority of lots of film and bumped this movie up to top priority :)

Blood Gnomes first though, its surprisingly requested despite its suckiness

Shelved behind some rarer stuff I'm afraid. It's on the horror channel tomorrow (or was it tonight)... soon anyway, for those that can't wait

It will be released though, just has to work its way through a system (which got a little backtracked because of some Crusade captures coming out undersized repeatedly)

Butt ugly encodes though from what I hear, and probably from a naff print. But yes. Shame the guy doesn't hop on ed2k and grab some of my public domain releases like Lil' shop and The Terror :) There some neat flicks on that site, but there also seems to be problems with censorship and broken encodes :(

There's the MPEG2 DVD stream though of course, grab it direct:
http://freecache.org/http://www.archive ... ombie.mpeg *try this one first, its the cache and should be faster*

i just finished downloading the dvd mpeg2 from archive.org and had a look at it. and i have to say this: KEEP YOUR FINGERS OFF THIS FREE DOWNLOAD!!!
:matrix:
the audio is absolutely awful. for the first 45 minutes there is a constant rustling noise which is quite loud. and then for the rest of the movie there's no sound at all!

damn, i downloaded 2.8 gb for nothing. :rage:

The print had no decent sound when it was restored in 1932, or it was totally unusable. Had to be pain stakily restored. Same went for the picture, but luckily they managed to find a print that wasn't too badly detiriorated.

I wouldn't expect that to be much better in terms of noise. We are talking 70 years old when the print was restored, negatives start to deterioate immediately, if you have a print thats viewable without total reconstruction after 30 years your damn lucky.
