Doesn't seam like it's out on dvd, so I guess I'll have to order it on vhs. unless someone else has it lying around and could rip it, that is...

likantropusAP, cool tnx! =)

Well I have no idea actually. I'm looking to get great picture quality of course, but I would be happy if I didn't have to sell the car to buy the equiptment. I have probably around 20 or so films I'd like to release I guess... so I don't want to make a real big investment out of it. I've got tons of questions....

I hear Pinnacle are nice, but there are so many versions and editions:
Pinnacle Liquid Edition 5.5
Pinnacle Liquid Edition PRO 5.5
Pinnacle Studio AV/DV Deluxe Version 9
Pinnacle MovieBox DV ver.9
Pinnacle MovieBox USB ver 9
Pinnacle PCTV Deluxe Ekstern USB, Retail
Pinnacle Studio Deluxe Versjon 8 PCI
Pinnacle MovieBox USB ver 9
Pinnacle PCTV SAT CI PCI
Pinnacle Studio AV/DV Versjon 9
Pinnacle Studio DV Mobile
Pinnacle PCTV Pro PCI
Pinnacle PCTV USB-2 Ekstern
Pinnacle Studio DV Versjon 9 PCI, Firewire, Retail
Pinnacle PCTV Stereo PCI, TV reciever, Vision 5 software

1. What's with these deluxe editions? They are MUCH more expensive than the regular ones, so I guess there must be some goodies in them?
2. Liquid Edition? DAMN expensive!!!!
3. Moviebox?
4. Cann I use the 'PCTV' cards to rip vhs with? they are quite cheap....
5. Studio DV Mobile ???

Someone sent me a mail telling me about a new card from ADS Technonlogies called 'USB Instant', which supposedly is very good. Comments?

Spud is always saying the DV bridges are nice. Do I need one? Or is an internal card good enough?

I see some cards are very cheap. Like this one:
Hercules DV Action DVD Videoediting PCI, Firewire
http://europe.hercules.com/showpage.php ... show=2&f=1
but it don't have any of the s-vhs or composite sockets!?!? How could I connect that to the vcr?
Are the differences in the final quality really that big to the expensive ones?

There's also many rather cheap external boxes, like:
TerraTec Cameo Grabster 200 Ekstern video box http://productsen.terratec.net/modules. ... 6&menu=309
eMagic USB 2.0 Audio/Video Box 704x576 25 fps fullscreen video capture http://www.emagictech.com.tw/pv326ch-1.htm
eMagic USB 2.0 MPEG4 Audio/Video Box MPEG-1/2/4 full screen video capture http://www.emagictech.com.tw/pv358c-1.htm

Finally, I would perhaps like to be a cameraman too. Any recomendations to routes to get there? Was thinking about applying at a school in Canada, but having a hard time finding which to choose...

First thing to say is the final quality of your video very much depends on the quality of the master tape, therefore, since you'll be using a vhs tape, the best thing you can do is play it with a svhs equipment, that is now becomig cheaper, even if a normal vhs player with quasi svhs output would do as well, since the master tape is normal vhs.

Anyway if you're planning to be a cameraman and editor owning a consumer svhs could be useful.

This is because you'll connect it to your video capture card or conversion box via y/c cable which reduces some problems with video noise.

TBC on the player may be useful when copying to another tape recorder, but not when using a digital capture card sionce that kind of equipment has something very similiar to a tbc built in.

Secondly, depending on what kind of equipment you'll be using in your future film school, or better in order to avoid any problems that could arise from that, I think you should buy a card or box with all kinds of inputs:

so, even though I was very impressed by the PV-358C USB2.0 MPEG IV Audio/Video Capture Box, if you're planning to go to a film school you may need something more compatible and/easy to bring around with you (if you are to edit on the field with a laptop, for instance) so I'd say:

Pinnacle Studio AV/DV Version 9 or
Pinnacle Studio movie box dv

Movie schools usually don't let you use film cameras untill you are very experienced, and in the mean time you'll be using
svhs, dvcam, dv or dvcpro (or betacam) camcorders and this is why I suggest you a card or box with both analog and digital inputs.

Synchronized audio is a very important thing, if you don't want to spend hours for correcting out of synch video and audio manually in post production .

So avoid capturing audio with the audio card or it will require resynchronizing.

A powerful pc is also necessary (i mean at least 1000 mhz, 7200rpm hd, 256mb ram).

the PV-358C USB2.0 MPEG IV Audio/Video Capture Box is also interesting but doesn't have dv input. You could, when needed buy a simple dv pci card (very cheap) but you won't be able to make on the fly format conversions.

On the other side if the movie school is a good one you'll find all the newest equipomet there (that is the reason why they're so expensive, so beware of movie schools with little equipment, they are trying to sell you the idea that they'll teach you the art of filmmaking and they're stealing your money as well).

It's all for now, when you have things we'll discuss about codecs for capturing video and audio.

I have the analog Pinnacle card

the DC10+

I capture audio through my soundcard and I never had trouble re-syncing movies.

I did have trouble syncing movies with my old Asus V3800 TNT2 card with capture features :D but that's a different story

OH MY! Just watched it again and it was even more fun than I remembered! Had a couple of laugh of loud scenes.

Best of all though, guess who's in it? None other than the king of anti-comedy Bob Saget himself!
