I know how to make a film hardsubbed,but that stinks so I always make seperate subs,but how do I add multiple subs to an avi (eg:english,french,spanish) so I can switch between them while watching the movie like they do in the anime scene.been looking for a decent guide on the web but am not sure how this is called so...

In the anime scene they usually use OGM or MKV containers for multiple subs and audio tracks. Don't have experience with them though.

yeah,I know,but it must be possible,coz I have downloaded a movie in the past that was an avi & had multiple subs

Its simplest not to include them in the actual container. Just rip the subs as vobsubs and you can switch between the languages, or name the subs like:
movie.year.blah.avi
movie.year.blah.ENG.srt
movie.year.blah.FR.srt

and you should be able to switch through them that way.

If you want to mux in subtitles into the actual container, you might be better off using a container that supports extra streams. MKV is a decent enough one, although standalones tend to be picky. Then again, if you cheap out on a standalone that's what you get

yeah,I usually do it like that Spud avi+some srt files but I have to rip a film for a m8 & he asked if it were possible to include it in the avi.Seems I was wrong btw I don't have a multi subbed avi,it's an mkv

will prolly keep it avi+srt coz his divx player only supports avi/mpg ( of course )

as for muxing it into an mkv,I'ld love to learn to encode in that way but alas,I dunno where to start

well technically AVI doesn't even support muxing in VBR mp3... its only been acheived by a dodgy hack (hence why if you use normal virtual dub you get the message about the audio). You can mux in extra audios to avi but its only via exploiting the container.

MKV natively supports multiple streams, and has less overheads.
