OK, I'm sure there's a way to add subtitles to an AVI file permanently, but I'm damned if I can find it. I have the Star Wars DiVX's and I want to add the brief subs to the AVI before I encode with DVD2SVCD & CCE. The only methods I can find involve frame serving the subs & avi direct from Virtualdub to TMPGEnc.

Isn't there a way to open the avi and subs in Vdub and then save out a new avi file with the subs hardcoded?

There is, But I can't remember how ATM, If no-one else answers, I'll take a look when I get back from work.

sure, with vobsub filter for example (vobsub_vd.vdf), but that means you will reencode the whole movie again to mpeg4. is that what you are looking for?

the best method is to use frameserver (it's not that hard )


EDIT: ah sorry, of course you can save uncompressed avi file

Open avi in Virtualdub.
Open subtitler filter.
Open subtitle file.
Save avi.
Job done.

I know how to frameserve into TMPGEnc, it's a piece of piss. But TMPGEnc doesn't produce results as good as DVD2SVCD & CCE does and I don't know how to frameserve into this application.

If I can hardcode the subs into the avi I can just bang it straight into DVD2SVCD and I'll be well away. It's just getting that avi with the hardcoded subs.

It's done using a filter in Virtualdub, but I can't find the guide I used now
